    The irony of silence

In 2017, Simon Tam won his years-long battle to own the right to call his Asian American dance-rock band The Slants. Simon’s Matal v. Tam victory only emboldened the path he was already on to reclaim the power that racist bullies had tried to take from him in his youth, while amplifying and organizing the voices of Asian American artists and activists. In this Odd One In teaser, Simon takes us into the courtroom at the Supreme Court on the historic day of his hearing where the Justices debated if Simon’s band name was offensive to Asians. Meanwhile, the only Asian Americans in the courtroom that day—including Simon Tam whose name was on the docket—weren’t allowed to say a word. Odd One In’s episode sharing Simon’s journey from bullied punk tween, to national crusader for justice and Asian American voices is coming soon. Socks flapping

In order to get to the yurt Jess Silver and her partner built as their first home together on the Queer Land Project they co-founded, strategy and pre-planning is essential. Forget to leave boots at the barn? Prepare for a muddy, sock-flapping adventure. In this Odd One In teaser, Jess gives us a glimpse into the literal path she forged to her off-the-grid life on Silverwell Farm. Jess is the co-founder of the farm, a 34-acre cooperative experiment just outside of Olympia, Washington. The Project is home to about a dozen hardworking queers and a handful of children. Jess and her landmates are raising pigs, building shelters, and tapping trees for Bigleaf maple syrup. But that’s just her homelife. At her day job, Jess is an Ecosystem Services Analyst with Stanford University and the University of Washington. Odd One In’s second episode sharing Jess’ journey in DIY baby-making, climate change researching, and anarchist queer farming is coming soon. Beautiful 80's dyke mullet

Lesbians’ hair game is unmatched, of course, and Jess Silver’s mullet is one of the best of the best. In this Odd One In teaser, Jess gives us a glimpse into what it’s like being the most stunningly coiffed scientist on campus. Jess is the co-founder of Silverwell Farm and a 34-acre Queer Land Project just outside of Olympia, Washington. The Project is home to about a dozen hardworking queers and a handful of children. Jess and her landmates are raising pigs, building yurts, and tapping trees for Bigleaf maple syrup. But that’s just her homelife. At her day job, Jess is an Ecosystem Services Analyst with Stanford University and the University of Washington. And while her hands-on life on a communal farm might be a stark contrast to the domestic lives of her academic colleagues, it’s Jess’ hair that’s the most obvious marker that she’s an outsider making her own way as a scientist and scholar. Odd One In’s second episode sharing Jess’ journey in DIY baby-making, climate change researching, and anarchist queer farming is coming soon. At 24-years-old, he found out there was a third option: music. In Odd One In’s debut podcast episode, follow Lee’s unexpected reinvention into Old Chingu as his life is saved through hip hop and faith. In this episode you’ll also meet author and professor Dr. Daudi Abe, Seattle first hip hop scholar, who will flip your understanding of what hip hop is and who it’s for. "Have you eaten yet?"

For many of us in Asian families, food—and the question have you eaten yet in particular—is our love language. That was true for second generation Korean American musician Philip Lee, better known by his stage name Old Chingu. Faith and hip hop saved his life

ODD ONE IN is a podcast that shares stories of misfits making their own way. The show is hosted and produced by 2021 AIR New Voices Scholar Kristin Leong. This podcast is a production of ROCK PAPER RADIO. Listen and subscribe here. When Philip Lee was an 18-year-old community college student, he spent a night in jail high on Ecstasy and LSD. He thought he had died and was being punished for his troublemaking teenage ways. Lee made a bargain that night that changed his life. Today, Philip Lee is better known by his stage name Old Chingu, which means “old friend” in Korean. His music is a blend of hip hop, anti-pop, and faith. It’s an unexpected mix, but it’s working for him. Old Chingu just dropped his first album, and one of his singles recently passed over a million listens on Spotify. This is a teaser of Old Chingu’s story, as well as the first listen into ROCK PAPER RADIO’s new ODD ONE IN podcast. Our pilot episode sharing Old Chingu’s journey as an misfit musician and first generation son is coming soon.
