PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 92: A New Beginning?

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 92: A New Beginning?

This is it, folks. The final PensBurgh Podcast of the 2021-22 season.
Robbie and Garrett sit down to share their thoughts on the conclusion of the first-round series against the New York Rangers.
In addition, they also look toward the future. Both hosts discuss the impending free agents, how likely it is some return, and whether or not some new faces (or old friends) could be added.
A discussion is also had on the futures of some front office members. How safe are Ron Hextall and Brian Burke’s positions with the recent Fenway Sports Group takeover?
This week, the mailbag features six questions, ranging from potential Evgeni Malkin/Kris Letang replacements to us ranking the impending free agents, and much more.
Enjoy this week’s episode and, as always, thank you for listening!

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 91: Crosby’s injury and uncertainty going forward

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 91: Crosby’s injury and uncertainty going forward

Oh, how the tables can turn.
This week, Robbie and Garrett return to give their thoughts on the Pittsburgh Penguins through Game 5 of their first-round series against the New York Rangers.
And, of course, the biggest topic on everyone’s mind is the health and status of captain, Sidney Crosby. Robbie and Garrett analyze the real possibility of Crosby missing action, and whether or not the Penguins can overcome his absence, at least through the end of this series.
The mailbag this week houses six questions. We’re talking about Jason Zucker’s impact since his return, the rise, fall, and rise again of Kasperi Kapanen and the potential for a rebuild heading into next season.
Enjoy this week’s episode and, as always, thank you for listening!
*Side note: Apologies for Garrett’s lackluster microphone sound over the last two shows. The problem should be fixed for next week’s show.

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 90: Reviewing Game 1 of the Penguins-Rangers series

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 90: Reviewing Game 1 of the Penguins-Rangers series

The 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs are finally here. The Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers definitely got that message.
Tuesday night’s triple overtime classic featured so many twists and turns, it’s useless to list them all here. Igor Sheshterkin making 79 saves, Casey DeSmith leaving the game during sudden-death play, Louis Domingue’s improbable journey to hero, and so much more.
This week’s mailbag is absolutely massive, featuring 11 questions ranging from the now-infamous spicy pork and broccoli, to Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin’s futures, and potential dark horse players who could make an impact throughout this playoff run.
Enjoy this week’s episode and, as always, thank you for listening!

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 89: Gassed and Outclassed?

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 89: Gassed and Outclassed?

Who are the real Pittsburgh Penguins? Are they the team that shut out a playoff-bound Boston Bruins side and trounced the lowly Detroit Red Wings? Or are they the team that looked uninspired and slow against their fiercest rival in the Philadelphia Flyers and the rising Edmonton Oilers? Is there a happy medium somewhere to be found here?
The Penguins are 4-5-1 in their last 10 games played, not a statistic that fills you with optimism with the playoffs just a week away. In your estimation, are the Penguins gassed and heading towards another first-round disappointment? Or are they conserving energy for when the games “actually matter”?
This week’s mailbag is loaded with six great questions. Is Sidney Crosby the top all-around player in league history? What direction will the Penguins take if they suffer defeat in round one? What are the best tourist spots in Pittsburgh? Tune in to find out these answers.
Enjoy this week’s episode and, as always, thank you for listening!

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 88: Faith in DeSmith?

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 88: Faith in DeSmith?

This week, we’re talking about the real possibility of Casey DeSmith playing as the Pittsburgh Penguins’ number one netminder come the first week of May when the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs begin.
Tristan Jarry’s status is undetermined at the time of recording, with Mike Sullivan labeling Jarry as ‘week-to-week’ with an apparent foot injury. If Jarry isn’t able to suit up for Game 1, how much confidence do you have in DeSmith’s game, given his up-and-down season, to steer the ship between the pipes during the most crucial time of the season?
This week’s mailbag also sees the two hosts reflect on the star-studded 2003 NHL Draft class, discuss strange playoff rituals, highlight Amanda Kessel’s recent hiring, and much more.
Enjoy this week’s episode and, as always, thank you for listening!

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 87: The Dumoulin Dilemma

PensBurgh Podcast, Ep. 87: The Dumoulin Dilemma

This week, we’re talking about the declining play of Brian Dumoulin. Typically a reliable, stay-at-home yin to Kris Letang’s offensive, risk-taking yang, the shutdown defenseman has been in a very noticeable rut. The 30-year-old seems to have lost some of his mobility while making some questionable decisions in his own zone.
Could this be a case of Dumoulin playing through some sort of nagging injury, or is it time to seriously consider benching the veteran and/or explore trade opportunities in the off-season?
It seems even Mike Sullivan, who is very dependent on his veteran players, has taken notice of this, and moved Dumoulin to the second pairing during the last game against the Islanders, with Mike Matheson taking the top spot alongside Letang.
Is the decline of Dumoulin real?
Meanwhile, the mailbag this week sees the two hosts take questions on playoff-clinching scenarios, some potential new faces next season, and much more.

I miss Hooks Orpik

This was actually a great, fun and insightful show in the past despite its irregular release schedule. But without Hooks (Jim), the long-winded pacing and shallow discussions really cripple this show. People who regularly watch Penguin games won’t learn much or hear anything too remarkable. I have been a fan of the team since the 90s and think PensBurgh as a site is excellent in general, but their podcast is disappointing.

Not prepared

Listened faithfully since the inception of the podcast, but question whether I will continue after listening to Frank M. through the first two episodes this season. Gave him a pass for nerves on the first episode, but he was a train wreck in the second episode. Frank mumbled slowly in his monotone voice sounding bored and slightly intoxicated. Worse, though, was how unprepared he was and how little he knew about the games and players he was discussing. He couldn’t even remember who was on the team! I didn’t have a problem with his brutal honesty about the team’s poor start this year (including Malkin) and found it somewhat refreshing. The final straw, though, was Frank’s disingenuous opinion ripping Malkin’s play since 2015 when Kessel arrived. Frank said Malkin had been struggling since Kessel’s arrival (I believe he said Malkin was disinterested or lacking commitment). Did Frank even watch Malkin the last 5 seasons? He appeared to miss two Stanley Cups, a 98 point season, Malkin scoring over a point a game every year during that span and 74 pts. in 55 games (a 110 pt. pace for 82 games) last year. Garrett rightfully jumped in to disagree, but I question how you can put a guy on a podcast about the Pens who doesn’t know anything about the team or the players?
