It seems that everyone knows someone who’s struggling with mental health. Is that because we’re more open about mental health, or because more people are struggling with their mental health? 

Dean VanderMey of Set Free Ministries joins us to share how the way we’re living, the choices we’re making, the habits we’re forming are deeply affecting our mental health. He shares rules and tools that set us free!

There are 3 M’s that keep us from experiencing freedom in Christ: meditating on our pain, medicating our pain, and being motivated by our pain. To experience freedom in Christ we can instead: Face our pain, forgive those who’ve hurt us, and follow Jesus.

He reminds us of the importance of taking every thought captive and making them obedient to Christ as well. There truly is freedom in following God’s instructions that he gives us in His Word.

Also, Shawna gets honest about how the Lord has convicted her of looking at worthless things. Our great God who loves us rescues us from what holds us captive.

Perry says, “I wasn’t looking for Jesus. I was just wanting to play hoops so I could get a scholarship to play college basketball.” But Jesus found Perry that night and that gave him deep love for Jesus. But he shares, “I still love him so imperfectly!”

God has been showing Shawna the sin of pride in her heart. It’s painful. But so, so good of Him to lead us into righteousness.

One of Perry’s favorite films is the 90’s classic Twister. Besides thinking it super romantic, Perry thinks it’s an amazing story of how God uses storms to transform us.

Have you ever let someone steal your peace? On Saturday morning Shawna was flying back from Orlando and “airport guy” tried to put fear in her heart. But she kept her eyes on Jesus and trusted Him to get her home.

It was one of the first times Perry was filled up with the Holy Spirit. He was a teenager in a living room in St. Paul, MN with other teenagers praying for him. He didn’t expect anything to happen. But what happened still astonishes him to this day.

When she was in her twenties Shawna was so anxious. She beat herself up every night for not being perfect. An experience with Jesus made her realize how loved she truly is and freed her to love others. How has God’s love changed you?

She was just 5 years old when she gave her life to Jesus, but at nineteen, as a college student with friends of many beliefs, she had questions about her own faith. Her search for answers to those questions led to even deepter faith.

When Perry’s Muslim friend questioned Perry’s belief in Jesus Perry humbly admitted that he didn’t have an immediate answer to his friend’s questions but promised that he would look into it and follow up with his friend.

There are many who have questions about Jesus, the Bible, and if the resurrection really happened. There are solid answers to those questions, inside and outside the Bible.

Lindsey encourages us to be ourselves and naturally enter into conversations about what we believe with others through genuine friendship.

Also, in this episode, having our sin pointed out is painful. But when it’s God doing it, it’s only love that’s behind it. Perry and Shawna get honest about how God is showing them their pride.

Last, last week was really hard for Perry’s suffering friend, he was spiraling out of control. But Perry and his suffering friend were not swept away by the raging torrent because of one powerful promise of God!

Grammy and Dove award winning artist Ce Ce Winans, who sang “Goodness of God,” on the American Idol finale on May 19, joins the team!  Ce Ce shares how she fell in love with the Father; and when life got so hard she didn’t think she could take another step.

Ce Ce also shares that the Lord is calling her into deeper water. She muses, “I pray God will work through me like he did in Acts!”  “People brought the sick into the streets and laid them on mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them,” (Acts 5:15).

Then, when Ce Ce won the Dove award for Artist of the Year in 2022, it was totally unexpected. She hadn’t rehearsed her speech. As she stepped up to the mic, what came out of her mouth was stunning and beautiful.

Next, what will Jesus do to reach someone? Whatever it takes. Case in point, Jesus showed up at the 2024 American Idol finale through Ce Ce Winans and Roman Collins. Then Ben asks Perry for the story behind his new single, Tears This Side of Eden. Tears was birthed in suffering, not victory.

Perry was on his way to the studio today when Satan shot a piercing arrow of accusation at him about one of his past sins. And then it occurred to him, “Oh the enemy’s opposing me cause I’ll be talking about the 1500 people groups in the world that still don’t have the gospel.” The enemy loathes the idea of these peoples being reached.

Mike Latsko of FrontiersUSA says, “Let’s give the devil a really bad day by reaching these people groups!” Mike shares the grief he feels about people like you who don’t have a chance to worship Jesus because no one’s brought the gospel to them. The 1500 include Muslims, Buddhists, Hindu, and tribal peoples.

One of the obstacles to reaching these 1500 is that we’re not sending anybody to them. Why?? Another obstacle is that all the easy places in the world have been reached. What’s left are the hardest places!

Another obstacle: We’re in a war. Satan and his minions have been doing all they can for 2000 years to keep these peoples from being reached. Then, God is doing something unprecedented in 2024. The gospel is spreading virally among previously unreached peoples. What if leaders in these movements could go to the 1500?

Last, the gospel has not reached every person and place on the planet. But it will happen: “The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea!” (Hab. 2:14).
