    Veterinary Pharmacy

    Hosts: Fady Abdlrasul, PharmD & Kristen Longstreth, PharmD, BCPS Guest: Rikki Horne, PharmD, FSVHP and Megan Flanigan, PharmD, FSVHP Summary: In this episode, Fady and Kristen interview Dr. Rikki Horne and Dr. Megan Flanigan from the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center. Drs. Horne and Flanigan are both veterinary pharmacists working side by side with veterinarians taking care of various species of animals. They each talk about their different journeys on their way to becoming veterinary pharmacists. They talked about how the role of veterinary pharmacists have changed over the years and how veterinary pharmacists do much more than verify prescriptions. We also talked about what it takes to be a veterinary pharmacist and who would do well as a veterinary pharmacist. It was a lot of fun learning about how dosing for animal medication differs from human medication and how you have to be able to be creative and think outside the box as a veterinary pharmacist! Dr. Paulsen is a supervisor at Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, MN, and works in Nuclear Medicine to help manage the Radiopharmaceutical Lab. In his role, we works with acquisition and preparation of radiopharmaceuticals to support all aspects of clinical and research operations in meeting patient needs. Andrew is also involved in education programs for Nuclear Medicine Technologists and Radiology Residents. Prior to working at Mayo Clinic, Andrew worked for a nuclear pharmacy providing radiopharmaceuticals and other services to multiple hospitals and clinics in Northern Illinois. He is Board Certified in Nuclear Pharmacy and received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and Masters in Public Health from the University of Iowa. Dr. Macek is a Senior Medical Science Liaison for AbbVie . Travis graduated from Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2016 before pursuing two years of residency training. He completed his PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice residency at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio before moving to Raleigh, North Carolina to complete a PGY-2 in Critical Care Medicine at WakeMed Health and Hospitals. Upon completion of his PGY-2, Travis took a job as a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) at AbbVie, focusing on the research and development of medications in the gastrointestinal space. Recently, Travis has taken a position as a Senior MSL in the hematologic malignancy space at AbbVie, which will grant him more exposure to pipeline medication development and launch support. In this episode, Travis talks to us about the pillars of being a medical science liaison, what a typical work week looks like, the difference between being an MSL and a drug rep, and much more!  Thank you for listening! Dr. Caraballo talks to us about his journey after graduating pharmacy school and what led him to a career in the medical cannabis industry. He also talks about the history of cannabis and how it has been used for millennia prior to being classified as a controlled substance in the U.S. AJ also talks to us about some of the differences between working as a pharmacist in a traditional community pharmacy and working as a pharmacist in a dispensary. AJ gave us some really great advice on who might be cut out for a career as a medical cannabis pharmacist and who might not enjoy it as much.
