Artist and activist Audre Lorde wrote, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence. It is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” As organizers, we know that caring for ourselves and our communities physically and spiritually is a critical aspect of pursuing our socialist project. Yet, the concept of self-care is often commodified and removed from its radical tradition in order to advance consumerism and fracture solidarity. On today’s episode, we’ll discuss self-care and community-care from our experience as socialist organizers fighting back against racialized, patriarchal capitalism in our work, school, home, and personal lives. Our guests are Cheryl Rivera and Sabrina Bazile, DSA members and organizers. We’ll also hear an update from Kazembe Balagun of Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung on this month’s ongoing series of programs in the spirit of Audre Lorde, Black Solidarity in a Global Context.
