Saturday 11th, May, 2024: Cumberland Council, Book Banning: Ghassan Kassisieh, Legal Director, Equality Australia.

Nevena and Janet Jukes, talk to Ghassan Kassisieh, Legal Director, Equality Australia,

Cumberland Council in Sydney crossed a dangerous line by banning books featuring same-sex parents from its 8 public libraries. Yet in just days, over 30,000 people have signed the petition to reverse the ban.

Equality Australia, together with local resident and proud grandmother to a rainbow family, Caroline has stood up to say, our communities deserve better than this.

Equality Australia, is urging people to get involved. History and studies have shown how a powerful united voice  can be to those who want to erase LGBTIQ+ people from public view.

And LGTBIQA+ funding in the recent state budget.

The Victorian government is launching an inquiry into women’s pain and experiences within the healthcare system in a bid to drive solutions to the systemic issues facing women’s health.

A recent survey of Victorian women showed that close to half of women are affected by issues relating to their periods, pregnancy, birth and postnatal care, as well as conditions like endometriosis.

Saturday, 4th May, 2024, Samantha Westbrooke Executive Manager, Conservation & Advocacy National Trust

Saturday, 4th May, 2024, Samantha Westbrooke Executive Manager, Conservation & Advocacy National Trust

Samantha Westbrooke Executive Manager, Conservation & Advocacy National Trust talks to Macca and Michael about the Victorian Government proposal to retire and redevelop all of Melbourne’s 44 ageing high-rise public housing estates by 2051.

Samantha discusses why it is important to look at the diversity of heritage values etc, but we do not have details of the actual nomination (we did not nominate the towers and the nomination is confidential) and we are not involved in the assessment process, that is Heritage Victoria.

The National Trust is concerned that the Victorian Government proposal to retire and redevelop all of Melbourne’s 44 ageing high-rise public housing estates by 2051 is being conducted without the necessary assessment of the inherent cultural heritage values of these places. As should be the case with any re-development proposal, these sites should be assessed prior to any decision making or commencement of works.

“At least 28 women have died, allegedly at the hands of men’s violence, so far this year. And many more women are living with the harms of men’s violence all across the country.

One in four women have experienced violence by an intimate partner or family member since the age of 15. One in five women have experienced sexual violence and one in five women have experienced stalking. While we seem to be making progress in reducing 12 month prevalence rates of intimate partner violence, our Personal Safety Survey also indicates the rates of sexual violence and stalking have not been changing. It’s clear we need more action”.
