Saturday, 11th May, 2024: Freelance Journalist Dechlan Brennan. Yoorrook Justice Commission updates.

Nevena and Janet talk to Dechlan Brennan about Yoorook Justice Commission updates.

Appearing before the Yoorrook Justice Commission, the Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos acknowledged royalties agreements were intentionally legislated and designed to effectively exclude Aboriginal people from their share of more than $1.5 billion in land use revenue.

The Victorian Treaty Minister has told a truth-telling hearing the state will thrive in the future if it can come to terms with the truth of the unfinished business of colonisation.

Appearing before the Yoorrook Justice Commission on Thursday, Minister Natalie Hutchins faced a series of questions by the commissioners about the rejection and delays of several recommendations from the interim Yoorrook report.

The commission made 46 recommendations after speaking to 84 witnesses – many of them victims or direct descendants of victims, of the stolen generation. The government took 210 days to respond before accepting only four of the recommendations in full, and a further 24 in principle.

The Victorian Premier has told the historic truth-telling inquiry in Naarm she is prepared to apologise to First Nations people for the injustices suffered due to government policies.

Appearing at the Yoorrook Justice Hearings into land injustices on Monday, Jacinta Allan became the first government leader to appear in front of an Indigenous truth-telling commission in Australia.

In a witness statement tendered to the commission, Ms Allan said she was prepared to apologise on behalf of the state at the conclusion of the inquiry.

“I am prepared to make a formal apology at an appropriate time in the future following the

conclusion of the Commission’s truth and fact-finding mandate,” she said.

Roxanne Tickle, a transgender woman from regional New South Wales, is suing the women-only social media platform Giggle for Girls and its CEO, Sall Grover, for alleged unlawful discrimination after being blocked from using the networking app.

On Thursday, the federal court heard “this case is the ‘What is a woman?’ case” as closing arguments were made in the trial – the first time a case of alleged gender identity discrimination has been heard by the federal court.

Cumberland Council in Sydney crossed a dangerous line by banning books featuring same-sex parents from its 8 public libraries. Yet in just days, over 30,000 people have signed the petition to reverse the ban.

Equality Australia, together with local resident and proud grandmother to a rainbow family, Caroline has stood up to say, our communities deserve better than this.

Equality Australia, is urging people to get involved. History and studies have shown how a powerful united voice  can be to those who want to erase LGBTIQ+ people from public view.
