166: Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century w/ Jennifer DiBella

166: Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century w/ Jennifer DiBella

Zetus lapetus, it's about time we covered one of the EIGHT Disney Channel Original movies that came out in '99, and who better to do it with than someone who auditioned to be in Zenon: Z3, actress Jennifer Lauren DiBella?
While movies like The Matrix and The Blair Witch project were redefining cinema as we know it at the local megaplex, DCOMs were the talk of the schoolyard for 90s kids who couldn't convince their parents to take them to see Stuart Little for the 5th time. Today, Phil is finally taking the plunge into this pre-teen cultural phenomenon. Do these films stand the test of time as classics major, or should they be left to rot in 20th century TV jail. This is Zenon: Girl of the 21st century

165: The Thirteenth Floor w/ Jessica Ellis

165: The Thirteenth Floor w/ Jessica Ellis

Writer/Director (And our go-to guest for subpar movies) Jessica Ellis is back on the show this week to talk about a movie that reaches for the stars, and barely hits the clouds; the embarrassingly executed sci-fi thriller THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR.
We talk about all the ways this movie fails to live up to its promising premise, and the few ways it manages to sneak in the odd pearl. We also discuss the unfortunate way female stars in the 90s were used up and forgotten about, and the film's unavoidable connections to more popular films of the time, such as The Matrix and Gattaca. (Inexplicably) Kick off your shoes, and hop into another reality, as we put on our tin foil hats to and dive head first into the world of simulation theory, forgotten actors, and Roland Emmerich.

164: Topsy Turvy w/ Karen Han

Karen Han (Writer @ Slate) makes her triumphant return to the podcast with Mike Leigh's musical period drama TOPSY TURVY.
Things get contentious on the show as Karen and Phil ride hard for the movie's masterpiece status, and Kenny tries his darndest to understand where they heck they're coming from. We pick apart the history, performances, and top-tier directing present in this oscar winning movie to find some common ground on where it deserves to stand in the pantheon of classics, and Leigh's filmography.

Non-celebrity podcast - thank goodness

Refreshing to listen to a non-celebrity podcast....as if celebrities have more of a right to spread their opinion to hold a podcast than others.
Host uses a number of “um’s” which is so annoying and please please get better audio when guests are being interviewed! The last one about Sex and the City was like listening to a guest sitting and talking through a muffled paper bag.So hard on the ears to want to keep listening.

Fun film podcast

Great concept and fun cohosts who bring the perspective of working film and television writers.

If you are a fan of Blank Check you will like this show.

Great concept

I started listening to this podcast yesterday because the hosts have gone on record as loving Nicolas Cage’s The Rock. I have since listened to five or six episodes and will continue to do so. The hosts are highly knowledgeable, the film conversation enjoyable, and the concept to cover all the films from a particular year in history is great.
