Alan Leeds talks Prince, Paisley Park, D'Angelo, James Brown and more!

Alan Leeds talks Prince, Paisley Park, D'Angelo, James Brown and more!

Leeds' music career began as a music writer. He first became involved with James Brown as his publicity director in 1969, and worked as Brown's tour manager from 1970 to 1973. Beginning in 1983, Leeds managed tours for Prince during the peak of his commercial and artistic success, notably including the Purple Rain Tour. Leeds' work with Prince culminated in his eventual naming as president of Prince's vanity label Paisley Park Records in 1989.  Leeds' career as a tour manager continued with D'Angelo, managing the successful Voodoo Tour in 2000. This was followed by stints with a variety of others.

That sound

Great episode on the time and family albums. Love the way you guys broke those down. To Ant’s point about that whirring sound on “screams of passion”- I believe that’s a guitar effect called a flanger. Prince used that effect to GREAT effect on a lot of his songs. You can hear that exact effect at the very end of “she’s always in my hair”. Just my two cents. Thanks for the podcast fellas. I’m always learning something new thanks to you guys.

Love this podcast.

Love your podcasts. Although Scotty showed his true colors on the last podcast. Self righteousness at its best. Praising Kirk LOL .....and saying he’s worth 50K a show. ( and saying “you can change a life” by “doing this”) sounding like an evangelist. I can’t stand his underlying, disgusting unwarranted arrogance. So you STILL went after him after his death “he owes me this”. You are a piece of work. Gross. I will never look at you the same. Exactly the type of person who should have never been around him. Have a seat.
