    My QI journey (so far)

    I was interviewed about my quality improvement work by my good friend Robin Pap - Paramedicine academic and QI thought leader... I love QI. Robin has been recording conversations with QI “experts” (I use inverted commas as I am certainly NOT an expert… more an enthusiast with a couple of projects that have had a decent impact) to share with his 3rd year paramedic students. It is part of a module they are studying called “Quality and Safety in Paramedicine”. We cover: - Why I think clinical governance and quality improvement is cool - How I got involved in QI - The projects I have done which have (I think) had a significant impact on patients - QI tools/methodologies I've used  - Some of the challenges encountered along the way - My advice to clinicians at the beginning of their QI journey Here is the publication of the Coffee & Cases QI project I led on at Sydney HEMS.     PonderMed #21: Two pilots, one doctor... at the Grand Round

    Captain Alexander Jolly and Captain Dave Fielding are commercial airline pilots. I met them through Project Wingman, a pandemic-induced collaboration between the UK aviation industry and the NHS.  For the last few months they (along with a few of their colleagues) have been helping us train. Specifically, they are debriefing and writing up human factors performances (overseen by clinical faculty) in a multi-specialty/disciplinary in situ simulation programme.     PonderMed #20: Two pilots, one doctor

    Captain Dave Fielding and Captain Alexander Jolly are commercial airline pilots. I met them through Project Wingman, a pandemic-induced collaboration between the UK aviation industry and the NHS. We met up over a coffee in the Whittington Hospital "First Class Lounge" and compared notes on our respective professions. In particular we discussed human factors and simulation training.     Graham Cooke is a Professor of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London and member of the WHO Essential Medicines Committee. His research has focused on HIV, TB and viral hepatitis. He is currently working on multiple large scale COVID-19 research projects. This is the second of a two-parter with Graham. In this episode we discuss the COVID-19 testing landscape and some of the work he's involved with in this area, including REACT and DNAnudge. Cheers everyone.     Professor Graham Cooke is a Professor of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London. His research has focused on HIV, TB and viral hepatitis. He was chief investigator on the STOPHCV-1 trial and currently has clinical studies running in the UK and Vietnam. He has also been active in promoting access to medicines and is a member of the WHO Essential Medicines Committee. He is currently working on multiple large scale COVID-19 research projects. This is the first of two episodes which will feature Graham. In this one we discuss how the research landscape has changed recently, the RECOVERY trial and his thoughts on the Remdesevir saga (so far). Robbie Ponder_Med

    This is the first of two pods I've recorded with Lt. Col. Dave Grossman - a former US Army Ranger, paratrooper, and Psychology Professor.  He is the author of On Combat: The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace; a book that describes coping strategies for the physiological and psychological effects of violence for people forced to kill in their line of work.  On Combat has become a popular book in the Emergency Medicine community. It turns out there are plenty of parallels between the sharp-end of healthcare and the battlefield. This podcast put On Combat on the EM map. This is my talk titled My Mental Toughness Manifesto which On Combat had a huge influence on. In this first episode we discuss the relationship between physiological arousal and performance, and the concept of stress inoculation. Enjoy! Robbie Ponder_Med
