Ignore at your professional peril

NOTICE: If you are a podcast professional or yearn to become one, you will be officially certified as incompetent if you don’t listen to this conversation. It’s a refreshingly transparent and revealing conversation between two insiders - deep insiders - who could have used the opportunity to spout off about how smart and successful they are but instead express their bafflement (and, it should be said, their delight) in being on the front edge of discovery, where mistakes are inevitable and ignorance abounds, in this, what may turn out to be the latest Golden Age of Podcasting.

Or maybe not. How many previous incarnations have we seen? And yet – and yet - Serial. But so what, Serial? Are you just another regressive media loop-de-loop, or do you usher in something legitimately new and vibrant and worthy of taking out a mortgage on?

These are the sorts of questions that the host of the Press Publish podcast, Joshua Benton, director of the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University, asks Jenna Weiss-Berman, the newish head honcho at Buzzfeed’s podcast skunkworks.

Has podcasting finally arrived, semi-permanently? are advertisers convinced the demographics/metrics are good? Is Buzzfeed hiring? (Yes, maybe; Yes, more so; and Yes, a few this very week).

And what sort of hire is Jenna looking for? (authentic, unheard voices, people with real audio skills, something between NPR perfection and shockjock exuberance).

And some real news: Buzzfeed has a deal in hand with an unnamed celebrity to host a new 5-part podcast set to be launched in October; wants to launch a Daily Show-type podcast news thingy aimed at a young audience; is exploring some sort of relationship with Acast, a Swedish tech outfit that apparently has developed a p-cast multimedia platform that Jenna thinks is way cool.

So listen up. Lots to chew on. Lots of insider stuff that you should not miss.

A Must-Listen

Great podcast. Loved episode #1. Really looking forward to the next episodes. A must-listen for tech journos (as well as: just techs and just journos).

Keep up the great work!
