Prof. Peter Scanlon: the 'Founding father’ of diabetic retinopathy screening

Eyes On Tomorrow

What was the motivation that led Professor Peter Scanlon to develop a digital screening service in Gloucestershire? And how did he transform this into a national screening program, which has been adopted in over 30 countries around the world?

John and Dermot learn how managing the finances of his contact lens practice, which he ran from his basement in Cheltenham, helped Peter to stand up to managers who wanted to take control of his research budgets. He shares his tips for dealing with bureaucracy and for a long and happy career, along with personal reflections on team building and leadership. Peter also tells us an amazing story of his encounter with a young Chinese girl with an unusual retinopathy.

As he approaches his 70th birthday Professor Scanlon’s passion for his work, his desire to innovate and his empathy for his patients remain undiminished.
