As a special holiday season episode, here's our book club discussion about Gregory Maguire's novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West." Many of us in the book club had just seen the Broadway musical so discussed the differences between the musical and the novel. What specific plot points from the novel are missing in the Broadway musical and why? We also discuss why the novel is NSFW and definitely not appropriate for young children, even though some of us read it in middle school.
We discuss the political themes in the novel, including the oppression of magic users and the animals. We reveal a major spoiler alert including the bleak ending of the novel...and that's all I'll write so I don't ruin it for those who haven't read the novel. Also, why were some revisions made for the musical and did these changes work?
