An absolute delight!

Admittedly, Romeo and Juliet is far from my favorite of Shakespeare's plays, but the fact that the show is in a mix of English and Spanish caught my attention. This version is lovely, with fantastic production values all around. One benefit of using a story as well known as Romeo and Juliet is that even people who aren't totally familiar with all the nuances know the general story well enough to be able to follow it. I don't speak Spanish well enough to follow all of it, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. In addition, the bonus material before and after the production are illuminating and heartfelt. It was refreshing to see afrolatinidad acknowledged and embraced in this production. Absolutely lovely!

Don’t listen to program notes

I love and know this Shakespeare play almost word for word. Listening to it in Spanglish makes my heart beat bright red! It is gorgeous. I live in California where this is how we converse on the reg and I encourage my children to learn as many languages as they can because we are all one and communication is key. However, I almost didn’t listen to this because of the program notes at the beginning. Why did the producers make this about American race politics? What difference does that make, especially with a podcast? Shakespeare was English and his work resonates globally. Why did you take something so beautiful and universal and try to divide it by being proud of the main speaking characters color? Baz Luhrmann did a wonderful production in the 90’’s with many characters of many ethnicities and sexual orientations and didn’t need to spit in peoples face about how proud they were to have people cast based on the the colors of their skins. Stop trying to divide people and let their true beautiful acting abilities speak for themselves. I heart Shakespeare forever 🖤
En Spanglish!!
