S4E23 - Taking Conscious Action with Brian Berneman

Our Spiritual Life

My guest in this episode is Brian Berneman who, along with partner Kayla Greenville, founded Conscious Action in 2017 in New Zealand. He is an expert on wellbeing and conscious living, and he and Kayla offer diverse courses, events, and coaching. We had a wide-ranging discussion about well-being, expanding our awareness, and living more consciously for ourselves, humanity as a whole, and the planet. Brian defined conscious living as awareness plus action and noted that our action needs to be based on informed response rather than reaction (from emotion or habit). So learning to be present is key. He said that we need to understand that everything is interconnected, so we need a holistic view - both as individuals consisting of body, mind & spirit and for the benefit of the world (all beings and ecological systems). Brian also talked about our need to "unlearn" all the programming or conditioning that keeps us from being fully conscious. To do that he recommended two simple steps: 1) create space through stillness (of body and mind), and 2) question your thoughts and experience - such as by asking "Where did that thought/feeling come from? Is it valid? Or is judgment limiting our perspective?" As we were wrapping up, he reminded people to remember that "We are unique and powerful and fully capable of change." Their podcast is Conscious Action Podcast, and their website is at ConsciousAction.co.nz.
