When I say drugs I mean all of them — caffeine, alcohol, Ozempic, Vyvanse, shrooms, DMT, MDMA, cannabis, cigarettes, protein supplements, steroids, and sugar in all its terror-inducing forms.

At their core, drugs for recreation and drugs for self-improvement all have effects on your mood, your energy, your focus, your memory, your sleep cycle and your overall enjoyment and experience of life.

Regular workouts increase dopamine. So does doom-scrolling instagram. So does cocaine. Which is best and which is worst? Which one is destroying our social fabric? The answer isn’t that simple, and it’s not the same for everyone.

I like cats. I had a cat, Max, as a pet when I was in grad school, but he ran away one day and I never found him despite lots of searching.

I did find an explosion of Max-coloured fur in our backyard, and our neighbourhood had stray wolves that roamed at night, but my wife and I still put up posters and searched the neighbourhood for weeks, because you shouldn’t make decisions based on limited evidence. Or should you?

All health begins with good mental health, and good mental health begins with a conversation.



A friend recently sent me a link to a public service message about mental health, it encourages us to check in on those closest to us, to ask how they’re doing.



What I noticed when watching the video is that the man’s friends did ask him how he was doing. But he chose not to be vulnerable, he chose not to confide.



It was the wrong time, it was the wrong place, men don’t cry, all that bullshit.I believe that we all care about the mental health of our friends. I believe that given some sort of sign, we’ll extend a helping hand, and give a comforting hug.



The problem is that all too often, we don’t get that sign, and before we know it, that friend can be gone.
