Scholé Sisters: Camaraderie for Classical Homeschooling Mamas

Scholé Sisters is the podcast for the classical homeschooling mama who seeks to learn and grow while she’s helping her children learn and grow. Scholé Sisters is a casual conversation about topics that matter to those of us in the trenches of classical homeschooling who yearn for something more than just checking boxes and getting it all done. In each episode, we cover our Scholé Everyday (suggestions for inspiration and growth), and a topical discussion relying on principles we find in books by people like David Hicks, James Taylor, and Charlotte Mason. Episode 152 is 🔥!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for episode 152! I found myself cheering as you laid the philosophical groundwork for your opposition to government funding for homeschool! I’ve been hesitant and leery of these “following the student” education funding bills for a long time and was raised by “scrappy” homeschooling parents of the 1980’s, so your arguments were both familiar to me and refreshing, in the current climate of all things government-funded.

Hard to Listen
2 feb
The subject matter and topics are very interesting to me; however, I go back and forth on whether it’s worth a listen. The constant laughing (at things that aren’t funny) is hard on the ear, especially when there are multiple voices laughing. This sounds so silly because having fun and being jovial is a wonderful, refreshing thing, but it’s an issue of how it hits the ear through headphones and it’s super grating. Also, they cannot manage to remain humble in how they approach such high brow topics. There is so much self-righteousness it feels icky. I think part of the beauty of being a life long learner is that the more you learn the more you realize how much you don’t know and it’s humbling. The pretension is overwhelming.
Encouraging

I love this podcast so much and find it so engaging, encouraging, and informative! I have found so much encouragement not only for our homeschool but for my own mother academia and mother culture. I have just been so very blessed by their conversations, sistership, classes and of course book recommendations!
A man’s view

This podcast is wonderful for men as well! My wife is a physician and we chose to homeschool. It made more financial sense to have me homeschool and I love it. This podcast helps me to dive into the philosophy of parenting and homeschooling. It continually reminds me why we homeschool and encourages me that it’s the best for our family which I need on the hardest days!
Invaluable!

Sad for thru children

You are opposed to your children openly talking about their feelings? I am scared and sad for them.
Anti-public schools
15/09/2024
I homeschool my children and was really excited about this podcast- I listened to a few episodes and enjoyed them. It didn’t take long, though, for the hosts’ opinions about public school to come out- they stated that they couldn’t imagine someone reading a particular book and still sending their child to public school (or even private). This is such a close-minded, black and white view that doesn’t take into account the many nuances and needs of families and children and why a family might choose public school. It also shames parents for choosing schooling options for their kids other than homeschooling. Really bummed about this lens and won’t be listening anymore. It is getting harder to find homeschooling podcasts that genuinely supports all kinds of schooling, and not a “homeschooling is best for everyone” approach.
Wasted time, weird alliances

I mistakenly thought this podcast was associated with Schole Academy from Classical Academic Press. It is not. The first half of each episode consists of each of the hosts sharing what she is currently reading but it’s in too off-the-cuff kind of manner. I’m pretty low-key and not at all type A and I found their chit chat to be annoying and a waste of time. There’s a lot of the hosts laughing at I’m not sure what. When I heard some of the books they recommended, it give me pause (for example Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth + Dannah Gresh). When I learned this podcast was connected to Moscow, ID + Doug Wilson, I knew it was time to move on. That man has bananas viewpoints that have nothing to do with classical education and how he’s gained such a following is beyond me. And I write all this as a fairly conservative Christian. There are plenty of other homeschooling podcasts that are a better use of your time.
Pretentious at best
08/04/2024
My podcast app recommended the show this morning and I was excited to have something new to try on my walk. I listened to the episode on unit studies and found it pretentious and judgmental at best. I probably agree with most of their methods and statements personally, but I would never speak to, or treat another homeschool mom who has made other choices in this way. There was a severe lack of grace and kindness. I'll stick with listening to Sarah Mackenzie or Julie Bogart who always has a spirit of encouragement and leaves you feeling empowered.
