    Episode 6 - Dr. Craig J. Boykin

    Episode 6 - Dr. Craig J. Boykin

On this episode, we are joined by educator and author Dr. Craig Boykin to engage in courageous dialogue aimed at subverting longstanding inequities pervading our schools. Dr. Boykin confronts uncomfortable truths impacting marginalized students. He pens transformative texts like “The IEP Trap” and “Right Motives, Wrong Methods” tackling education and special education pitfalls, polarizing tracking policies, and teaching tendencies that stifle empowered youth voices.
What emerges is a nuanced portrait of an achievement gap born not from lack of effort but lack of access, resources, understanding, and human dignity from classrooms to administration and beyond. As Dr. Boykin highlights pathways to educational justice, he calls equally on student grit, structural reforms, and paradigm shifts embracing the brilliance in every learner.
Educators, parents, students―all have a role in galvanizing school cultures where differences unite us and possibilities take root if nourished by equity. Allow Dr. Boykin’s words to instill hope while illuminating overlooked perspectives promising an educational future, we all deserve.

Episode 5 - Dr. Krista Edwards - BSPN, Inc

Welcome to another engaging episode of the Scholastically Speaking Podcast - the show that tackles the real issues impacting our schools. I'm thrilled to have joining me today the wonderful Dr. Krista Edwards part of the Black School Psychologists Network, Inc.   Dr. Edwards has dedicated her career to supporting students as a school psychologist, activist and advocate.
In this down-to-earth discussion, we'll explore the often underrated role these professionals play in nurturing student potential. The reality is so many kids face social-emotional challenges, learning differences, trauma, and other struggles that affect their education. We’ll shine a light on how vital people like Dr. Edwards are providing mental health care, abilities assessments, counseling, crisis response and more on over-burdened school campuses.
Yet despite this critical work, school psychologist shortages, lack of diversity in the field, and mental health stigmas persist. So in addition to getting transparent about obstacles many school psychologists confront, we’ll celebrate the hope they offer to vulnerable youth through their compassion. My goal is that you walk away with an elevated admiration for these everyday education heroes!
