Captain Mike Murphy and Anders "Slick" Slicklen - "Land Tuna."

On this episode of the podcast we sit down with two of our buddies and fellow Northeast fishermen, Captain Mike Murphy ("Murph") and Anders Slicklen ("Slick".) We have known both of these guys for a while now, and have had the pleasure of fishing together and competing against each other in our local offshore tournament circuit. They are both extremely skilled fishermen, and between the two of them have logged over 250 trips to the Northeast Canyons.

Mike and Slick have spent the majority of their careers as freelance mates/captains. They have both fished on many reputable boats and programs including; Castafari Sportfishing, Rebel Sportfishing, Pescaria Sportfishing, Provider Sportfishing, Gypsea Sportfshing, Rally Cap Sportfishing, and NautiBill. They have both been a part of tournament winning/placing teams, including the Tri-State Shoot Out, Oaks Bluffs Bluewater Classic, Big Game Battle, and the Northeast Offshore Cup. Both of them have been contributors on over $300,000 in combined winnings.

Slick is currently first mate aboard a 66' Spencer "Conspiracy" and has recently been fishing in Florida and the Bahamas.  Prior to working on Conspiracy, he fished with several living legends and mentors, including Captain Archie Jost, Joe Ferrule, and Mark DeCabia.

Mike is currently working as a freelance captain and mate working aboard several boats throughout the 2022 fishing season, including his own boat. He has a ton of experience fishing the northeast canyons and he has run and fished with many reputable programs from Gloucester to the Florida Keys.

These two are great examples of hungry, passionate, and hardworking young fishermen, and a lot can be learned,  and laughed about, from this conversation. We share a few fish stories, including one involving Mike diving in water to unwrap a blue marlin from the running gear... We talk a lot about canyon fishing, giant bluefin tuna fishing, daytime swordfishing, green stick fishing, and share some funny charter client stories.

We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did!

Capt. Drake and Katie Sawyer - "On Location"

Capt. Drake and Katie Sawyer - "On Location"

On this episode of the podcast we sit down  with our friend Captain Drake Sawyer and his wife and first mate Katie Coeckelenbergh- Sawyer. Drake and Katie run a private sportfish program; On Location, a 57' Capps Sportfish, with a home port of Port Aransas, Texas.

Katie, Drake, Paul Knowles (owner and angler) and the the rest of the On Location  crew, travel across the globe fun fishing and tournament fishing for billfish and tuna. Their most recent adventure was targeting monster blue marlin, big eye tuna, and giant bluefin tuna in Madeira and La Gomera (Canary Islands).

We have known Drake and Katie for over a decade now, and have had the pleasure of fishing with them in Costa Rica, Prince Edward Island, and our local waters off of Massachusetts.
Drake began his fishing career as a party boat mate when he was 16 years old, and at just 29, Drake accomplished 1,000 blue marlin releases and was featured as one of In the Bite Magazine's "Young Guns of Sportfishing."

This conversation was awesome, and we covered a wide variety of topics and stories. Drake is an extremely experienced captain for his age. He talks a lot about blue marlin tactics, his role and responsibilities as a young captain, and gives advice for mates and captains developing in their career. Katie tells a few epic tales about heartbreak fish, her role as first mate aboard the boat, and they both discuss what it was like to ship a custom sport boat back and fourth across the Atlantic.

We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did!

Captain Ali Hussainy - "Local Knowledge"

Captain Ali Hussainy - "Local Knowledge"

Our guest on this episode of the podcast is Capt. Ali Hussainy from Local Knowledge TV and BD Outdoors. Ali grew up living in San Diego, California and his first fishing experiences began with trout and other freshwater species as a kid. Fishing became a passion that only increased exponentially with his first exposure to saltwater fishing.

After spending years in the tech industry, Ali and his partner Jason Hayashi took the leap of faith to make their love of fishing a business itself. The proliferation of the Bloodydecks.com fishing forum and now BD Outdoors, online fishing magazine; has launched them into the forefront of web-based entertainment, information and marketing.
Since 2016, Ali and his good friend and partner, Captain Rush Maltz, have produced, hosted, and grown one of the most entertaining and cinematic fishing shows on television, Local Knowledge. The show explores the culture of fishing itself and follows real life characters that spend their lives dedicated to fishing and the outdoors. For the past seven seasons of filming, Ali has been fortunate enough to experience some of the most incredible fisheries that the world has to offer.  He has pursued many species of saltwater fish from Guatemala, to Magdalena Bay in Mexico, to PEI Canada, to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

Season 7 of Local Knowledge airs on April 20th, and new content airs every Sunday until September 2022.

Locally in California, Ali has been dialed in on the EPIC bluefin tuna bite that has been occurring offshore of San Diego for the past several years. In this conversation we get a chance to compare notes on our respective tuna fisheries. We discuss tactics, fish behavior, and generally nerd out on tuna fishing. All accompanied by many laughs and excellent fish stories.

We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did!

Many laughs, stories, and offshore fishing tactics discussed in this one. We cover a wide array topics with Mark and Shark. Everything from the discussing the captain and mate dynamic and the importance of trust, communication, and anticipation, to a 37 bigeye trip Mark and Shark had in 2021...

Matt Smalley - "Ground Balls and Big Fish Energy"

Matt Smalley - "Ground Balls and Big Fish Energy"

Thank you for tuning into the SeaBros Fishing Podcast!

Our guest on this episode is our good friend and fellow fisherman, Matt Smalley.   Like many of us, Matt was essentially born into fishing and has spent the majority of his life on the water. He has over 20 years of offshore fishing experience and has respectably logged over 100 trips to the Northeast Canyons.

Not only is he passionate fisherman, but Matt grew up as a serious athlete and competitor. He played hockey at a high level in high school and he attended Hobart College, where he played 4 years of Division 1 lacrosse. After graduating from Hobart in 2009, Matt went on to play lacrosse professionally for the Boston Cannons for 5 years as a defensive midfielder.
In 2010, Matt became the sales manager for Gibbs Lures, focusing his efforts on refurbishing the company's image in both the inshore and offshore fishing community. In 2013, Matt joined the Castafari team, fishing with Capt. Damon Sacco (@castafari), and has since become an integral part of that program's offshore accomplishments. In 2014, Matt partnered with his friend Mike Croteau (@mikecrow1), and became a partner and owner of Deep Ocean Apparel. Matt's focus at Deep is in sales management and social media. It is here where he can blend his passion for fishing and the ocean with a company that brands itself around the outdoor lifestyle.

Most recently, Matt has been spending most of his fishing time with his brother Dan (@deuceman11) aboard their family's 46' Wesmac "Tuf Guy." Over the past several seasons the Smalley's have been dialed in on the giant bluefin bite that has been taking place in the summer months off of Rhode Island. The Smalley's catch rate and success of the past few years, has earned them the respect as one of the top producing boats in their area.
We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did!
