SFUltra

Brainwashing myself into loving science fiction, one book at a time.
Wonderfully weird sci-fi reviews
20/02/2024
Sean McTiernan’s new project SFUltra is a treasure trove of weird, alternative sci-fi reads, filtered through the host’s always insightful-yet-irreverent commentary. Can’t recommend enough for anyone interested in transgressive/experimental sci-fi (or literature in general), this show has hugely broadened my conception of the genre.
[SFULTRA] The beast at his best

Sean McTiernan, the rambling man himself, finally gives himself permission to get excited about science fiction. That happens; it's fun.

Listened to 2 episodes and loved both. Spree and Murder Death Koreatown. Excellent style and love the quickness and free flowing vibe. Hope more episodes are coming at some point!
My new favorite!

This is one of the most thoughtful podcasts I've ever heard. It's constantly obvious that Sean never says ANYTHING without thinking about it first — which makes it really easy to become engrossed. I've showed this podcast to four friends already and they all love it too!
a diamond of the first water

Stumbled upon Sean's writing for the Baltimore City Paper, specifically his brilliant Christmas-Not-Christmas listicle of 2016. It took me about ten seconds to discern the alternative sensibility at work behind those sparkling write-ups. Located his Hundreds of Dead Bodies series after some light sleuthing, and now I'm a fan for life (or at least until he stops podcasting). Sean is an extraordinary cinephile whose ardor for neglected genre fare is a joyous intoxicant. His defense of The Mask of Dimitrios was so powerful it probably caused an existential fissure to open somewhere in the universe. To misquote the great Sydney Greenstreet, I'm a man who likes listening to a man who likes to talk. Keep up the incredible work, mate.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sean is engaging and intelligent, but most importantly (not important at all) he hates 99% of the same things I hate. Five stars.

Having an affection for people doing solo podcasts, I was excited to listen to All Units, more so because while I enjoyed the sporadic episodes I listened to of Mr. McTiernan's other podcast The Wonder of It All, I was most taken by his one on the Resident Evil movies. Having an overaching objective, breaking down the thriller, with fillms relating to component parts one week and a looser followup episode the next, allows for an encompassing, knowledgeable speaker who never overloads or patronizes you. These episodes fly by in the best way, and McTiernan always has a confidence about him that he's put in the work and knows just what he wants to to say, which is what I took away in the Resident Evil episode, but now he's doing it on a consistent, frequent schedule. Also, he recently went on a great rant, which nothing can claim to be good without, especially podcasts. Highly recommended.
I'm in an airport

I just drank a bunch of coffee in an airport and listened to the episode where Sean goes off about some clueless Guardian article and it took everything in my power not to start laughing like a maniac. 5 stars. Just listen to the podcast already.
