Shockwaves: The Bali Bombings is an audio documentary series that explores the lives of people in Australia and Bali who are impacted by the Bali Bombings. This podcast shares their resilience in dealing with this trauma, and what they’ve learned from it in the past 20 years.
The podcast opens with recollections of the night the bombs went off in The Sari Club and Paddy’s Bar. Moving through the immediate aftermath, the tireless work of the health workers in Bali and in Australia, the investigations and trial of the perpetrators, as well as how some of those who lost loved ones have forgiven the bombers, this podcast ultimately focuses on the effects of the tragedy 20 years on, and the hope and healing of those who survived.
In this series you will hear from Erik de Haart, Simon and Norri Quayle, Dr Fiona Wood, Ayu Sila (cashier at The Sari Club), Ni Luh Erniati (Balinese widow), Putu Budiarsana (Sanglah Hospital Nurse manager) Dr Ketut Ariawati (director Medical Support Sanglah Hospital) Andy Thorp (former Australian Federal Police officer) Daniel Herri (Balinese local) and Megan Basioli – our youngest survivor, just 14 at the time.

Episode One: The Bombings
On 12 October 2002, a trip to a nightclub in Kuta - Bali’s tourist district - ends with 202 people dead. A series of bombs are detonated, killing many instantly and leaving others trapped. Those who survive the initial blasts clamber to escape against unimaginable scenes. Shocked and injured, survivors try to find their mates while helping those around them.
This episode includes the recollections of Erik de Haart and Simon Quayle. Hosted by Network 10 Senior Journalist, Ali Donaldson, who arrived the next day to cover the story.

Episode Two: The Hunt for the Bombers
AFP officer Andy Thorp arrives in Kuta to find who is responsible for the Bali Bombings. The trial of the bombers leads us to Ni Luh Erniati, a Balinese woman who lost her husband in the attacks, but through finding forgiveness now works to stop the spread of extremism. Hosted by Network 10 Senior Journalist, Ali Donaldson.

Episode 5: The Storytellers
What does it mean to be the custodian of people’s last moments? In this episode, you’ll hear from survivors of The Bali Bombings- along with our host Ali Donaldson - on the impact of telling their stories over the past two decades. This episode is about the importance of preserving memory and re-writing our own narratives.

Episode 6: A Child Survivor’s Story.
Megan Basioli was the youngest West Australian survivor of the bombings. Twenty years on, she tells us how she coped as a teenager, and how some teenage boys stepped up becoming very special people in her life. We also return to Bali and meet local Daniel Herri for some final words on the importance of spirituality in healing.
