Challaine's Notes from the Sidelines: If we knew then what we know now, things would be different, but if all that didn't happen, we wouldn't be where we are today. Booze is a chemical manufactured as a good time; young people aren't seeing hangovers, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, barfing, sleeping around, regret, shame, money lost, and relationship problems. There's a lot going on behind closed doors that we're not sharing. Governments are putting profits before people. Alcohol is just too available. To get well and sober, start with the basics: water, sleep, fruit, vegetables, exercise, and family support. Let's idolize celebrities for health and going sober. It is a choice to pick up the drink. We can break these generation curses. Alicia's Notes from the Sidelines: Learn to have confidence in your role and don't feel less than because you're the stepmom. You can't call the shots, have it your way, or run the show as a stepmom. It's normal to feel imposter syndrome if you are the stepmom and don't have your own kids. Alicia's best advice is to have house expectations for everyone to follow, and you must enforce them. It's okay to have different relationships with each stepchild, and it's okay to struggle to love them at tines. Things to expect during the holidays as a stepmom: last-minute schedule changes will happen, so plan for shit to go sideways, and don't complain to your partner when it does, because they are already struggling; talk about the actual holiday days ahead of time so you can incorporate your own traditions; go easy on the alcohol; know that the kids are going to be exhausted and maybe not even excited anymore so give them grace; don't compete with the other house over gifts. It's important to take care of yourself; fill your cup so you feel refreshed and recharged to take on family drama. You and your partner will experience situations differently, so ask, "How can I support you and what does that look like?" Look in the mirror and own your own flaws; you can't change anyone other than yourself. Get help early and often because everything is good until it's not. Find someone other than your partner to talk to. Robin's Notes from the Sidelines: • We need a tribe when our children are growing, and when our children leave. • Don't outsource your power. We hold the power; we know our bodies best. • If you don't have any other identity besides mom, empty nesting will be a challenge. • You cannot change things overnight; change happens with 1% shifts. • You are always going to face judgment. Not everyone is going to like you. Differences are an opportunity to share and teach. • You should not judge others for their decisions; instead, get curious. • You have to get uncomfortable to grow. Ask yourself, "What is this discomfort trying to teach me?" • Who you surround yourself with matters. • It's important to have quiet time every morning to go inward, so you can show up better for yourself and others. There is always time -- it can be any time of day, and the amount of time doesn't have to be one complete block. But make it a rule to avoid your phone first thing in the morning; rather, express gratitude or set a positive intention. • You can do personal growth for free -- library books, online resources, YouTube videos, relationships. • Whatever your lived experience has been so far, it's been what you needed, and now, in the next chapter, you get to create the best version of yourself... Notes from the Sidelines: It is scary to think about becoming an empty nester. It is also scary to think about how quiet the house will become after girls go to college. The fear of high school ending is very real. Also, the fear of living with someone, a complete stranger, and sharing space in college is scary. The idea of fitting in on a college campus, especially a large one, is scary. The fear of fitting in doesn't ever go away. Wondering what people are thinking of us is always in our heads, no matter how many friends we have. When we allow the wondering of what others think of us to play over in our heads in a constant loop, we run the risk of comparisonitis and potentially isolating ourselves to feel safe and prevent rejection. It is normal to wonder what the balance is between wanting to be interactive and wanting to keep walls up. It is scarier to think of being judged on our character versus being judged on something superficial. It is normal to fear the college workload. Moms fear the prevalence of drugs on college campuses and the possibility of drugs being slipped into drinks or dorm rooms. Her journey through cancer highlighted the importance of whole-person healing—addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Dedicated to helping others, Claudia creates a supportive space where women can find hope, connection, and actionable insights to thrive through and beyond their cancer journeys. Claudia's Notes from the Sidelines: Medicine is not black and white; different opinions will lead to different suggestions. You might be surprised to find that you will not get all the medical answers from doctors, but actually a lot will come from other survivors. One out of three breast cancer cases will experience recurrence, so... Do your own research, find survivors, listen to podcasts, and do everything you can to avoid having the disease return. Menopause came along with breast cancer, and menopause is a topic not openly discussed outside the breast cancer community. Community is so important for those going through the breast cancer journey. It's okay to reach out to others. People want to help, but they often don't know how to help. Self-care must be a priority, because if mom isn't healthy, then she can't take care of her kids. And if you aren't a mom, then take care of yourself so you can take care of the things and people in your life that matter to you. It's okay to not be busy, to say no, to put yourself first, to relax, and to let it be.     Christine MacCarroll is a Functional Nutritionist, Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition(™), and a Certified Brain Health Professional. She’s also a woman with late-diagnosed ADHD, and mom to a daughter with ADHD. After helping her then-2-year-old daughter overcome a neurological speech disorder using nutritional therapy, she realized the assembly-line style, one-size-fits-all, “pill for every ill” model of modern healthcare was better suited for factories than families. Sadly most doctors have little to no training on true healing. So she rebelled . . . and has helped hundreds of women recover mood, energy, and mojo, slaying period problems and clearing up brain fog and ADHD symptoms along the way. Christine is also the creator and host of the podcast ADHD, Naturally: Smart Solutions for Holistic Women, where she shares her no-BS views on all things holistic brain health for women. Christine's Notes from the Sidelines: There is shame and stigma around any kind of different functioning brain, and smart accomplished women don't want to talk about it. "Masking" is the term for acting like how we are supposed to. Women with ADHD who feel like they're supposed to fit in the world a certain way and don't feel anxiety, and thus get misdiagnosed with anxiety and OCD. In order to improve mental health, we have to also look at brain health. Time blindedness means having awareness of trying to do too much in less time, so Christine uses "bumpers," things like timers and alerts to force habits on her. A diagnosis brings awareness, and instead of going toward shame, let it bring understanding of "what can I do now," compassion, and grace. Trust yourself. Don't dismiss the idea of ADHD or brain challenges because of your accomplishments - it just made it harder to get those accomplishments and harder to acknowledge the difficulty of getting those accomplishments. We live in an attention economy, so everyone's distracted. Don't let that prevent you from seeing your real challenges. When we believe one side is right and the other side is fundamentally wrong, we are shutting ourselves off from ways we could get benefits and losing the capacity for the best possible outcome. Julia's Notes from the Sidelines The alternative to spiritual bypassing is to be able to fully sit in good feelings and acknowledge how far we've come, and experience joy. Many people who grow up in chaotic homes learn to just be quiet, not ask for help, and do what they're supposed to do, thus becoming "the good girl." Podcasting offers an opportunity to reflect on successes and take credit for them. Know that you are not alone, and you have the capability within yourself to handle whatever comes your way. Know that whichever direction life goes, there's purpose and something to be learned. Lean into the discomfort of vulnerability. Make mistakes and own them.     Karen Bernetti is a yoga and meditation teacher, and recovery support specialist, dedicated to supporting families impacted by a loved one’s addiction. The founder of the Serenity Circle, an online membership community empowering families to grow healthy and strong emotionally, physically, spiritually, and financially, she believes…. families need recovery too! A leader in the Family Recovery Movement, Karen’s mission is to create a world where the shame and stigma around mental health and addiction no longer exist. Having personal experience with addiction in her own family, she understands the fear, anxiety, and isolation that come with loving someone who struggles with addiction. Her own healing journey began over a decade ago. Her yoga practice and Al-Anon program helped her navigate the darkest days of her life. A believer in the power of mindfulness and community support, the Serenity Circle is a testament to her belief in healing through connection and compassion. Karen's Notes from the Sidelines: Even if children don't grow up in a household with alcoholics, grandparents can be considered qualifiers, because they raise the people who serve as parents to these children and pass on the -isms. Al-Anon isn't about healing the drinker in the home or getting them to stop drinking, but rather finding out it's not about them at all and instead, it's about you. When you live with addiction, there is chaos, so naturally we want to bring order, but it's difficult to control the uncontrollable, and we've heard many times on this show that we can't change anyone but ourselves. The drinker becomes an obsession. The family member living with the addict is likely to become hypervigilant, self-righteous, acting like a martyr, overdoing, overgiving, altering themselves to please, blurring boundaries, and developing insecurities. All of these behaviors together fall into the category of codependency. Addiction is contagious and impacts the whole family unit. One out of four families are impacted by addiction. As of 2022, 46 million people in the United States over the age of 12 have substance use disorder; less than 10% of them seek treatment. "We can't incarcerate our way out of this problem... We can't just punish people because they have a problem." Karen speaks about the importance of compassion. The problem isn't the substance; it's why are they reaching for it in the first place. It's not about what's wrong with the addict, it's about what happened to them. We should be wondering why, as a society, we are reaching for ways to numb our pain. The majority of women is prison have been sexually assaulted. The majority of men in prison have grown up without a father. Many inmates are in prison for drug-related crimes. For many of them, drugs weren't "the problem," they were the solution. We pathologize people and say everything is a disorder; maybe it's the culture that's the problem. Families need to get strong - body, mind, and spirit - and only then can we possible lead our loved ones to recovery. One regulated person can impact the whole family unit.
