Emmy nominee Nina Parker uses her platform to shed light on triple -negative breast cancer

In a special *bonus episode*, On Topic, Off Script host, journalist Brian Mastroianni, chats with Emmy nominee Nina Parker . Nina Parker wears many hats — journalist, TV host, fashion designer. You know her from everything from E! News to serving as the current host of Friday Night Vibes on TBS alongside Kevin Fredericks — but today, she joins On Topic, Off Script in her role as an advocate for health equity. This comes from a personal place. Following her mom Phyllis’s battle with breast cancer as well as her own experience navigating healthcare, Nina is using the bright spotlight of her platform as part of Uncovering TNBC , a campaign from Merck that raises awareness about triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). It’s a form of breast cancer that disproportionately affects Black women. In fact, TNBC has an incidence rate that is two-times higher in non-Hispanic Black women compared to non-Hispanic white women. Brian sits down with Nina to discuss how we can better tackle the health disparities tied to  TNBC, share resources for Black women about the risks of this aggressive form of breast cancer, how her family’s personal health journey spurred her own advocacy work, and why it’s important to take charge and be your own best health advocate. That stress triggered psoriasis flares that kept getting progressively worse. Recently, she’s partnered with AbbVie to spread the word about psoriasis and help others living with the disease to seek more information and feel empowered to receive the support they need and deserve. Head to Psoriasis.com for more information. In May, she was featured in the 'Clearly Me' psoriasis photography exhibit in at the High Line Nine gallery in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, where portraits of Katie and other psoriasis advocates taken by award-winning photographer Lindsay Adler were proudly displayed.  Katie joins Brian to share more about her journey for others living with psoriasis, update us on what’s new with her career, and offers words of wisdom for how we can all go after what we deserve.  Katie Lowes: Instagram, IMDB Unpacking The Toolbox podcast: iHeartPodcasts psoriasisSPEAKS, sponsored by AbbVie: Psoriasis.com Music: The Right Direction by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.comLogo: David J. Martin For more info on host, journalist Brian Mastroianni: brianmastroianni.com IG: @bmastroianni

Sir Paul Smith talks opening Pitti Uomo SS25, the cycling accident that changed his life, and advice on finding inspiration in everything

On Topic, Off Script host, journalist Brian Mastroianni, sits down with iconic designer Sir Paul Smith. Since 1970, when he opened his 3 X 3-meter shop in Nottingham, England, Sir Paul Smith has been identified with his well-tailored men’s suits, defined by the Paul Smith Signature Stripe. In the years since, his company has expanded to 130 shops and counting globally — found in over 60 countries — growing organically from his iconic menswear to include women’s, junior, and home collections.  Unique in an era where fashion has largely become corporatized and impersonal, the company remains independently and majority owned by Sir Paul himself. A unifying theme throughout his designs is a sense of creativity, play, and let’s be clear - really great taste — something Brian saw firsthand earlier this year when he attended the opening of the Paul Smith Clubhouse at Nordstrom that saw the brand take over a floor of Nordstrom NYC with a look and feel that was undeniably...Paul Smith.  Soon, he marks another milestone — on June 11, he’ll be opening the 106th Pitti Uomo Spring/Summer 2025 menswear presentation to buyers and press in Florence. It’s his first time back there since 1993.  He’s on the show to discuss his return to Pitti Uomo, how a cycling accident changed his life and brought him to the path he’s on today, and his advice for how we can all find inspiration in …everything.  Paul Smith: Website, Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn Paul Smith's Foundation: Website, Instagram Sir Paul Smith's personal social: Instagram Music: The Right Direction by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.comLogo: David J. Jack Turban, MD, on new book Free to Be and how we can better support trans and gender diverse kids

On Topic, Off Script host, journalist Brian Mastroianni, sits down with Jack Turban, MD, MHS, an adolescent psychiatrist and the founding director of the Gender Psychiatry Program at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). On June 4, Free To Be (from Atria Books, a division of Simon & Schuster) hits the shelves of your nearest bookstore. Written by Dr. Turban, the book is an authoritative guide to understanding and navigating gender identity. The book comes at an important time. Kids today are more knowledgeable about issues around gender than ever before — for a point of reference around two percent of today’s teens openly identify as transgender — while anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric in general seems to be hitting a fever pitch among politicians and media figures who have gone to great lengths to politicize the identities of these young people.  Free To Be follows the stories of three trans and gender diverse young people — Meredith, Kyle, and Sam — who are navigating adolescence and their burgeoning understandings of their own gender identities. Underscoring all of this, the book features interviews with researchers and academics and advocates trans and nonbinary advocates who help unpack the complexities and nuances of gender identity and what they mean for young people today.  Jack and Brian go way back - Brian's had the pleasure of interviewing him many times for articles in the past. He’s here to share more about what it was like to write the book and how, by getting a better understanding of gender, we can all help build a safer and more supportive world not just for young people, but for all of us.  Jack Turban: Website, Instagram, X Free to Be: Simon & Schuster Website Music: The Right Direction by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.comLogo: David J. Armenian tech leader and women's rights advocate Amalya Yeghoyan on closing the tech sector's gender gap and speaking at the UN

On Topic, Off Script host, journalist Brian Mastroianni, sits down with Armenian tech leader and women's rights advocate Amalya Yeghoyan. Back in March, Brian attended a presentation that was given during the United Nations 68th Commission on the Status of Women, in New York City. The presentation was led by Amalya Yeghoyan, the executive director of Fund for Armenia Relief’s (FAR) Gyumri Information Technology Center (GITC). She was invited to speak on efforts to promote women’s empowerment through economic involvement and support in Armenia — and beyond.  For Amalya, empowering women through technology is a personal mission. GITC was founded in Gyumri, Armenia’s second-largest city, in 2005, with the aim of offering educational opportunities to local students interested in computer programming, design, science and math, leveraging tech to foster long-term employment opportunities for people in the region. Amalya is a graduate herself from GITC’s programs, starting out as a receptionist at the center and now...its executive director.  Her path is a crossroads where education, technology, and opportunity all met to empower her to succeed. Now, she wants other women to have the same opportunities. This year, GITC's Women’s Economic Empowerment Accelerator was inaugurated, and Amalya is excited to see more women take advantage of these programs.  She’s here to discuss the role tech can play in closing gender gaps in pay and opportunity, not just in Armenia, but globally, what it was like to speak at the UN, and what kind of world she wants to see her own daughter inherit.  Amalya Yeghoyan: LinkedIn Fund for Armenian Relief (FAR): Website, Facebook, X, Instagram, GITC: Website, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook Music: The Right Direction by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Logo: David J. Olympic medalist Freestyle BMX Rider Nikita Ducarroz on Paris 2024 and managing anxiety

On Topic, Off Script host, journalist Brian Mastroianni, sits down with freestyle BMX rider Nikita Ducarroz. A trailblazing athlete, Nikita won bronze in Tokyo 2020, the year that BMX Freestyle made its debut at the Olympics. She had a somewhat unconventional path to the sport — one of the top female freestyle BMX riders in the world, Nikita says soccer was her first love growing up, but that all changed when she developed what she describes as crippling anxiety in her teens. School and soccer became hard, but then...enter BMX.  She discovered the sport in 2010, practicing in the driveway and then to the local skatepark where she says she didn’t meet another female biker for three years. She went pro in 2016 and the rest is history.  While BMX is her passion, Nikita is an outspoken mental health advocate, she co-founded M1ndTricks, a platform on social media for athletes that connects them to one another and gives them the opportunity to speak about mental health. You can follow that on Instagram,  Now, she’s preparing to make her Olympics return -- from May to June she’ll be competing in the Olympic Qualifier Series as she rides down the road to Paris 2024.  Brian caught up with Nikita, a Red Bull athlete, earlier this year in New York as part of the Red Bull Olympic media tour, where she discussed how she works through her anxiety, M1ndTricks, the upcoming Paris Games, and advice she has for all of us when navigating our own mental health.  Nikita Ducarroz's socials: Instagram, Facebook, M1ndTricks, Blog Music: The Right Direction by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Logo: David J. Gloria Reuben talks hot flashes, 'ER' at 30, Tina Turner, and embracing change

On Topic, Off Script host, journalist Brian Mastroianni, sits down with actor, singer, and activist Gloria Reuben. She's an Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated star known for her groundbreaking role as Jeanie Boulet in the iconic medical drama 'ER.' She’s done it all, from touring with Tina Turner to authoring the book My Brothers’ Keeper, which honors the memory of her two departed brothers. She’s been seen on TV and streaming in the CBS hit 'Elsbeth' and was at SXSW earlier this year to premiere the new film, ‘My Dead Friend Zoe,’ in which she stars alongside actors like Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman.  Right now, she’s opening up about an issue important to her — her experiences living with moderate to severe hot flashes — also known as VMS — due to menopause. For Gloria, these hot flashes began to impact her daily life — with sweating and discomfort leading her to even feel nervousness in front of the camera. She’s now partnering with Astellas, the makers of Veozah — an FDA-approved 100% hormone-free treatment to reduce the frequency and severity of these moderate to severe hot flashes.  Gloria says she wants other women not to feel alone and to know that treatment is out there for hot flashes. In this episode, Gloria discusses her journey with hot flashes, her storied career, a big ER anniversary coming up this year, and some advice she has for all of us, especially for when we navigate those unexpected bumps in the road.  Gloria Reuben's socials: Instagram, X, Facebook, and TikTok Music: The Right Direction by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com Logo: David J. Bellamy Young, former 'Scandal' star, on her dad's story and what she wants you to know about cirrhosis

Award-winning actress Bellamy Young spent 7 seasons as Mellie Grant, ‘Scandal's' powerful first lady, and was most recently seen in Hulu’s ‘The Other Black Girl.’ Today, she’s using her platform to raise awareness about a health issue that can often be stigmatized and under-discussed — cirrhosis. The mortality rate for cirrhosis has doubled over the past 15 years, a bleak reality that has personal resonance for Bellamy and her family.  When she was just 15, her father passed away two years after being diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy — or HE — a complication of cirrhosis in which your liver doesn’t properly filter out toxins that can in turn cause cognitive issues like disorientation and confusion once they reach the brain.  Bellamy has been partnering with Salix Pharmaceuticals on Understanding HE, an awareness campaign to offer tools of support while shedding a needed spotlight on this condition. You can head to UnderstandingHe.com for more information on that.  On Topic, Off Script host Brian Mastroianni sits down with Bellamy to discuss HE, how she's honoring her dad's memory, and what's next for her -- from new acting projects to writing!
