    This story is connected to the Dragon Rider and Tavern Tales world in other episodes of Sleep & Sorcery. You don’t need to have heard those stories to understand or enjoy this one, but you may recognize some of the characters and threads woven throughout. In tonight’s story, you are the heir apparent to the throne of a powerful kingdom. However, on the day of your planned coronation, you learned of another claimant to the crown – you fled the capitol in search of answers. Now, you venture through unknown wilds, following every clue to the whereabouts of your supposed rival. When your journey winds through a small village, you encounter a legendary sword and a mysterious beast. But the creature the townsfolk fear is not, you find, an enemy – it is a lion, the symbol of your royal house.  If you’re still awake as the story comes to an end, I’ll guide you through a meditation to invite courage.

    The Crane Maiden | Japanese Folklore Sleep Story

    In tonight’s story, you are a poor woodcutter who discovers a wounded crane on your way home from the market. You care for the bird, nursing it back to health until it can fly again. Shortly after the crane departs, a woman arrives at your doorstep seeking a place to stay. The woman repays your hospitality with mysterious and seemingly magical gifts, which bring you great wealth. As your fortunes change, you become more and more curious about your house guest – until you discover her connection to the crane you once cared for. This tale is lovingly adapted from the Japanese folktale “The Crane’s Return of a Favor.”

    The Alchemist under the Mountain

    In tonight’s story, you awaken upon a mountainside only to discover the unattended cavern workshop of an alchemist, who is in pursuit of the great secrets of the universe. You explore the curiosities of this mountain sanctum, coming face to face with the alchemist’s supernatural helpers: gnomes, sylphs, undines, and salamanders. Each of these elemental spirits gives you a piece of the puzzle in alchemical wisdom.
