Sober·ish Uprising

Welcome to Sober·ish Uprising, a space where we share all versions of sobriety. We believe labeling sobriety as black and white is a limitation to those who know they want to do things differently and complete sobriety doesn’t work for them. On Sober·ish uprising we share sober·ish stories and the freedom that comes when we say no to booze. Hosted by Holly Krivokapich, a certified coach and former heavy drinker, who started a sober·ish journey in 2021 and her world has never been the same. www.soberishuprising.com

    3-Years Sober•ish - From 200+ drinks a year to a handful

“When you change your relationship with alcohol, you build an unstoppable confidence? If I can do this, what else can I do?”  Today, I am a totally different woman than I was on September 13, 2021. I am so grateful for who she was and so grateful for who I am.  I am grateful I took an (alcohol free) shot at a sober•ish life because that changed everything. Today I share the top three things that are on my mind as I enter my 4th year of sober•ish life from cultivating courage to menopause and at the end of the day giving your body, mind and spirit all they need to live YOUR best life. Thank you for being on this journey with me and if you are interested in starting your own, reach out to us at www.soberishuprising.com.  About Sober•ish Uprising  At Sober•ish Uprising we find freedom from alcohol on our own terms. Founded by Holly Krivokapich, a former heavy drinker who started a sober•ish uprising of her own and everything changed, we know it's not about saying no to the drink but saying yes to you. Holly works with 40ish, personal development junkies who are ready to put their sober curiosity into action, making it their next power move, and doing so with all the fun and none of the dread. Kristin - If the cost of drinking is your relationship with your kids. Isn’t that too high?

“There’s always a cost benefit. Now all it costs me is explaining to people why I don’t drink. Drinking would cost me having my kids see rage mommy and that's too high of a cost.”  Loved my conversation with Kristin, who’s been sober for 12 years... ish! Her decision to step away from alcohol wasn’t an overnight realization. Between managing her own autoimmune disease and navigating her child’s type 1 diabetes diagnosis, she began to realize that alcohol was no longer serving her health or well-being or her ability to mother the way she wanted. She shares that after being diagnosed with Lupus she removed alcohol (and made dietary changes) and a year later there was no trace of the Lupus.  She talks about how her sobriety enables her to take a pause, respond vs react and allows her to show up as the mom she wants to be for her four kids. As a parent coach she shares how it makes sense we have created community around alcohol and also the importance of redefining “self care” as ways we care for ourselves all day and not just a nice massage.  About Kristin Kristin Schmoke is a parent coach, mother of four, and has taught children 2.5 years old to college in her 25 year span as an educator.  She enjoys spending time near the water, gardening, and time with the family.  Her sober*ish journey started 12 years ago and she hasn’t looked back! You can find Kristin on IG at https://www.instagram.com/kristin.schmoke.parenting/ or by visiting her site at www.kristinschmoke.com About Sober•ish Uprising At Sober•ish Uprising we find freedom from alcohol on our own terms. Sarah -  Is it a mid-life crisis or a mid-life awakening?

“I’m 41 and clearly having a mid-life crisis. Sobriety has given me a clearer picture on my values and what I want in this life. When I was drinking, I knew it wasn’t working but I didn't have the strength to do anything.” Sarah found herself living for the weekend until the hangxiety of late boozy nights was debilitating and she knew in the depths of her soul she deserved better. On the morning after Easter in 2022 she knew she had to do something different. What followed was the mix of sadness and joy all leading to her midlife awakening as she gained the clarity to know what’s important and the courage to act.  Here’s what you can expect to hear.  Sobriety as a Life Transition  We talk about how sobriety is similar to other life transitions in that at first it does feel scary and daunting and you feel like you don’t know what you are doing (because you don’t!) but not to make that mean too much. Community as the antidote to Grief How the beginning of her sobriety was full of grief and depression and that the one thing that could have helped was having a community and learning to live life sober. Once she stepped out of the shame and shared her story, she began to see she wasn’t alone. She took this and created AF Social + Life with her friend Laura. Drunk “Vulnerability”  We talk about how you can  truly never be vulnerable when you are drinking. And in fact when you are, or someone else is, while inebriated there's a sense of invasiveness and manipulation. Are you taking advantage of them? Is it true vulnerability if it takes 3 glasses of wine to share?  Grieving while drinking vs. Grieving Sober We discuss processing grief with the loss of parents and she shares the difference in the grief process for her mother and father, one she was sober and the other not, and I share how my sober•ish life provided so much healing during my dad’s death.  It would mean the world to me if you subscribe, leave a review, and share this podcast with your friends, co-workers, and families. This will help the trajectory of this podcast and allow others who are seeking freedom from alcohol to find this podcast. About Sarah After 23 years of weekend binge drinking, Sarah said goodbye to blackouts and living for weekend cocktails.  She CRAVED connection with other women who felt the same way and needed to learn how to have FUN without alcohol!  After a phone call with her friend Laura, The AF Social was born. She brings her experience as a certified health coach through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, as well as my extensive event planning and community building background. She LOVES seeing women connect and create meaningful friendships through The AF Social + Life. About Sober•ish Uprising  At Sober•ish Uprising we find freedom from alcohol on our own terms. Dave - Rock Star Life, Psilocybin and AA Alternatives

“If AA works for let’s say 10% of people and that’s as high as any support group goes. Let's say no one does better than that. If we have AA getting 10% and another method helping 10% and another getting 5%, won’t that help more people?  There was no straight line to an alcohol free life for Dave. A musician from an early age, he was ALL in on the rock star lifestyle but realized in his early 20s he couldn't maintain that. He went to rehab and was alcohol free for 20 years until he wasn’t. You would think it would have been a rager but in reality it was a couple beers, sobered up to drive home and woke up feeling great. The absolute worst thing that could have happened. He convinced himself he no longer had a problem and within weeks he had escalated back to his 20s drinking and drug days and eventually back to rehab.  In todays episode we discuss,  How he is grateful that his drinking was off the rails and damaging as he couldn't BS others that it was okay unlike his father who slowly drank himself to death.   How even if AA worked for 25% of people (which there are no statistics on) there are still 75% out there who are looking for other solutions to find freedom and the importance of finding your own path to freedom from booze (or whatever else is disrupting your life). And one of my favorite topics, how important it is to define our “drinking problem” and solution for what serves the person we want to be and how the best time to evaluate the role of booze in your life is actually before it becomes a problem. Nick - Four-Time Cancer Survivor, Terminal Uniqueness and Vegas Arrest

“First time I had cancer, I was scared. Second time, I was mad. Third time, I was relieved. I can drink what I want. Who wants to mess with a guy who has inoperable cancer?” Nick’s resume reads like a work of fiction: Four-time cancer survivor. Motivational speaker. Arrested in Vegas for having sex with a hooker. But what's truly fascinating about Nick’s story is how it mirrors the experiences of so many others—the universal quest for belonging, security, and love, juxtaposed with the desire to feel unique and special, which often creates a profound sense of separation. In today’s episode, we explore: Terminal Uniqueness: How we use our perceived uniqueness to justify our actions and create separation, which can fuel addiction. The 'Me Against the World' Attitude: Why this mindset is a losing battle, given that someone loses and the world has been around for thousands of years. The Illusion of Strength: How building emotional armor might project power but often masks a victim mindset. Sobriety as a Daily Goal: Nick’s number one goal each year is to stay sober. Even after 10 years of sobriety, he starts every morning with that intention. Remorse vs. Shame: Understanding the difference and how Nick holds no shame for his past actions, as he no longer identifies with that person. And let's give a shoutout to Nick, who celebrates 10 years sober on July 14th!  About Nick After being thrown out of a Las Vegas hotel in a drunken haze, jeopardizing his career and relationships, Nick Klingensmith had to make a change. A 4-time cancer survivor, type-1 diabetic, recovering alcoholic with herniated discs, nerve damage and sleep apnea, he defies it all when he finds Obstacle Course Racing. Refusing to accept his limitations, he’s completed over 100 Spartan Races, 6 Major Marathons, several Ultras and scores of other obstacle and endurance events. Michael - Competitive Edge, Present Father and Data Collecting

“I started writing down ‘Why am i doing this?’. The first week was better sleep and then I noticed over time there were more reasons than I realized. As you start to go through the journey you start to uncover more reasons of the why which gives you more empowerment to continue for however long you want to go”  After being sober curious since 2019, Michael got serious about his curiosity last November setting a 6 month goal of sobriety.  As a regular drinker on the weekends, date night or social events he had tried previous stints of not drinking but felt ready to take on a larger mission after realizing that even after one drink things felt off the next day.  Raised in a non-drinking household where it wasn’t talked about Michael got to college and not knowing how to handle his drink which led to excessive drinking as a young adult.   He then drank like a “normal” adult but realized that even after one beer or glass of whisky, his sleep would be off.  We talk about the power of data to not only look at how alcohol affects your body but also in identifying your drinking triggers and staying connected to why you quit in the first place. He shares the shocking statistic of his resting heart rate dropping 17% after quitting drinking and although that may not all be due to a direct correlation of booze, the better sleep, lower stress and increased activity that comes from not drinking certainly helped.  He talks about as the CEO of a high growth company,  how being sober is his growth edge when leading his company and supports him in standing out from the others. And also how speaking on this topic on such a public platform like LinkedIn and with this team he has received so much support.  While better health and professional growth is important, the most significant impact is on his parenting. As a late in life father he has found he is more present with his kiddos knowing that the day to day moments he used to rush through, like bed time, are now so much more special. And his kids are showing up differently too.  About Michael Michael is an introverted leader who shares meaningful and honest stories on LI. He has  spent the last decade building and scaling professional services for marketing technology and is currently doing it as the CEO of Stitch (Braze). Michael loves to help others grow and learn and is obsessed with meaningful metrics & ruthless prioritization of my to do list. https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaeldburton/ About Sober•ish Uprising  At Sober•ish Uprising we find freedom from alcohol on our own terms. Justin - Ultimatums, Discovering your Baseline and New Brew

“It still feels like a miracle to me. How I was able to do something I never thought I could do. It’s so important to connect back to moments like that when facing something difficult.” Justin Wolf started New Brew, a euphoric seltzer, about a year ago after leaving alcohol behind in October 2021. Despite looking like a well-adjusted human with a successful career and marriage, Justin was hiding a dirty little secret (or so he thought). An ultimatum and the healing power of psychedelic drugs led him to find freedom from alcohol and create his own sober•ish journey.  After years of traditional treatment from therapy to pharmaceuticals it was when he developed his own tool kit of support that he was able to truly step into his version of sobriety.  He shares about the importance of finding your baseline without any substance, including coffee, to know what it feels like to just operate as you and the power of showing yourself “I’m okay when I have nothing in my system.” We discuss how just because people don’t want to drink alcohol doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t want to partake in an altering activity, it’s just the booze that is destructive for them.   We talk about how important it is for young kids to know what alcohol really does to your body and mind as so much development is going on during the times that kids are taught alcohol is cool. This is such an important conversation as we are in a time where there are so many healing modalities outside of what we have traditionally thought of. I am so grateful for people like Justin and his team who are disrupting the booze industry and I could not be more in their corner. Check out New Brew at www.drinknewbrew.com. While traveling in Mexico, he experienced the transformative benefits of Kava Root and Kratom Leaf, and set out with his two brothers to create a RTD beverage for California Sober and health conscious individuals like him. Before starting New Brew, Justin spent five years leading Global Partnerships at Google and launched Drip Drop, an electrolyte powder hydration supplement that is now sold at pharmacies across the US. Throughout his career, Justin has been an early investor and advisor in the psychedelic medicine space.  Now, along with his two brothers, Justin is on a mission to give consumers better alternatives to alcohol, and educate people about the transformative benefits of plants.www.drinknewbrew.com
