Sold a Story

Millions of kids can't read well. Scientists have known for decades how children learn to read, but many schools don’t know about the research. They buy teacher training and books that are rooted in a disproven idea. In Sold a Story, Emily Hanford investigates four authors and a publishing company that have made millions selling this idea.

There are some bad guys in this podcast- but for the most part, this is a story about how people try to do the right thing, try to learn and do better, and how easy it is for cooperations to manipulate people trying to do the right thing. That’s no solace for a parent or child who ended up harmed by what seems like such an obviously stupid educational theory- or for teachers who are still paying off student loans to colleges that utterly failed them in teaching this theory as science, or the school districts that spent millions on programs that had have utterly failed their communities. Science literacy starts with literacy- seems a small wonder that we have a populace that prefers loud to accurate- is afraid of science words (if I can’t read it I won’t eat it takes on a whole new meaning if you can’t decode words)- and prefers to “do their own research” by reading mommy bloggers and following politicians. I find it funny as a pretty liberal person that this gets tossed as propaganda. Science doesn’t care who found it- you can dislike an interpretation or find a conclusion faulty and still love the fact that the science was shouted out.

I’ve listened to this whole season twice all the way through now. I’ve shared this podcast with fellow moms and also with educators. It’s fascinating, very well produced, and so instructive.
