Solwata Kin is a podcast, produced by Talanoa, that highlights and celebrates Oceanic thought leaders. We will be speaking with academics, artists and educators from across Oceania, diaspora and on-Country, about their journey to becoming who they are. This podcast is an opportunity for you to learn more about the uniqueness of their journey and how their Oceanic identity is not only integral but is inseparable from their work. Through responsive storytelling, we aim to highlight the ways our thought leaders have carved their own paths, uplifted their peoples and re-imagined the future of our Ocean. Hosted by Talanoa’s creative director, Emele Ugavule, and associate educator Brandon Tacadena. Each episode unpacks how our guest’s identity as solwata kin is not only important, but inseparable from their work.

    Dr Tammy Haili'ōpua Baker

    Our third episode features the wonderful Tammy Haili'ōpua Baker. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. As a Director/Playwright/Theatre Educator/Scholar, her work centers on the development of an indigenous Hawaiian theatre aesthetic and form, language revitalization, and the empowerment of cultural identity through stage performance. He is a lecturer in Pacific studies at the University of Auckland, Principal Investigator for the Manalagi Aotearoa Pacific Rainbow LGBTIQA+ MVPFAFF Health and Wellbeing Project, the Pacific data co-lead for the Human Rights Measurement Initiative. PhD from the University of Washington - Seattle and lived in South Korea for 9 years. Freelance writer and consultant for many projects including SOGI rights, and the Pacific.     Dr Torika Bolatagici

    Welcome to our first episode of Solwata Kin featuring the incredible, Torika Bolatagici. Torika is a Fijian-Australian mother, artist and educator who produces multidisciplinary projects centering the counter-narrative of marginalised histories and knowledges through curatorial collaboration, photography, video, installation and publication. Torika is a lecturer in the School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin University and has a PhD from the School of Art and Design, University of New South Wales on the topic 'Somatic Sotia: Commodity, Agency and the Fijian Military Body.'
