Song Of the Week: City of Faith

The Daniel Stih Podcast

End your week on a creative note! In this week’s Song of the Week episode, I share the story behind my song, “City of Faith”, inspired by my mentor and the time I spent with Donovan - the Donovan, Leitch.

One day, on the less traveled island we were on, Donovan gave me the car and sent me on a trip down to the other side the island. He said I could go anywhere I wanted and to be sure to check out the old side. “Getʼs wild down there,” he said.

Adventure.

There were no street signs. Where there were forks in the road you had to guess which way to go. I went in circles. I thought I had my bearings calibrated to the water, however, there was water on all sides of the island, a few bays, and twists and turns.

I wrote this song using a few thing D said that morning. The chords are based on a very old set, what might be called roots. D said everyoneʼs got a song with these chords. He gave me an example by Neil Young. I started working on it then. My song, City of Faith, is about a city on the mainland. Can you guess which one? Could be yours.

Donovan said, “Where will you go with it [from the root chords]?”, as he played a few ideas. I put them all in my song. Why choose just one. It seemed like they all fit.

Music majors can explain it...

Discover how the song came to life and the creative process behind it. Then, sit back and enjoy the music. Wrap up this week with inspiration, self-expression, and an uplifting story and melody.
