In This Wheelchair Athlete's Family "Can't" Was a Four-Letter Word...And It Shows | Richie Bennett

Sports Will Save Us All

Richie Bennett grew up in a family full of athletes, with brothers everywhere, and himself has achieved  all sorts of athletic success—he was named a High School Academic All-American by the National Wheelchair Basketball Association and twice represented the United States as a USA Track and Field athlete at the Cerebral Palsy World Championships, once in Australia, and once in England, earning individual bronze medals in shot put, the 800m, and the 200m.

Hear how his parents encouraged and supported their boys in all of their athletic endeavors, discouraged the idea of “normal”, and established three golden rules:

  1. Never use the word ‘can’t’
  2. Be really competitive
  3. Be nice

BORP, the Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program that Richie mentions during the episode is online at www.borp.org.
