AthMindset | Black Representation and Visibility in Softball with Zoe Conley

AthMindset | Black Representation and Visibility in Softball with Zoe Conley

In this AthMindset episode, former Cal Berkeley Bears softball player gives her perspectives on black representation and visibility in softball. Lisa Bonta Sumii, LCSW, CSW, shares space with this incredible young woman, Zoe Conley. Zoe is a former softball player (Pitcher) for the University of California, Berkeley. As Zoe describes her time in softball, “I was one of the only black girls in the circle.”

It would be impossible to comprehend how a young black woman deals with this. We’re thankful Zoe spent time giving us insight into what it was like to not be recruited when it was clear she was deserving of collegiate offers and to not make certain softball teams because of the color of her skin. But Zoe isn’t bitter. She is using her experiences to help others. And conversations like this do just that. Zoe had the support of many people including her family. Her father was with her for many important conversations. And through all of her experiences, Zoe is now giving back — to anyone that will listen and especially young black girls.

Zoe Conley spends time with Lisa talking about playing an underrepresented sport, encouraging other kids, and the role of mental health in her life.

We’re privileged to feature Zoe on the SportsEpreneur platform–as she shows strength, courage, and a willingness to give back.

AthMindset | Project Myself with DeVante DuBose

In this AthMindset episode, Lisa Bonta Sumii, LCSW, CSW, shares space with DeVante DuBose. DeVante is a soccer player for the Richmond Kickers of the USL. He is from Oakland, California, and before joining the Kickers, he was the first-ever signing for the Oakland Roots Soccer Club. As you’ll quickly realize though, DeVante is way more than a soccer player. He is a deep thinker, a positive influence, and a privilege to know.

Right before this recording started, DeVante was asked, “how are you doing?” And in DeVante’s charismatic way he said with emotion and realness, “I’m too blessed to be stressed.” Simply put, we all need more of DeVante in our life. And with this young man appearing on this podcast episode, we’re hopeful, some of his style and good vibes will find its way into the world.

And while DeVante Dubose is no doubt having an impact, it all starts with himself. He has many projects going on, but the first and most important project is the project of himself. Hence the title of this episode, “Project Myself”. With Lisa’s support as a therapist and others like her, we think this episode is a great proof of concept and awareness for working on yourself.

Lisa and DeVante have an open dialogue about what mental health means, becoming from adversity, and asking questions. And with that, we hope you enjoy this deep and thoughtful conversation between Lisa Bonta Sumii and DeVante DuBose.

Normalizing Mental Health in Sports with Lisa Bonta Sumii

Normalizing Mental Health in Sports with Lisa Bonta Sumii

It’s time we start normalizing mental health in sports. And this podcast episode featuring Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Lisa Bonta Sumii, is one piece of content that attempts to do just that.

There are many conversations about mental health taking place in and around the world of sports. More is needed–so we will continue to take this topic on across all our content platforms and we will feature leaders in this space like Lisa. Speaking of Lisa — thank you to Lisa Bonta Sumii and therapists all over for helping so many when it comes to mindfulness.

Lisa is a Mental Health and Sports Performance Specialist at the Oakland Roots SC and a private practice therapist to elite athletes in California and Nevada.

Mental health is just as important as physical health, and thankfully, it is fast becoming more normal to talk about it. It’s also becoming normal for college sports programs and professional sports organizations to partner with or employee therapists. Examples of this include Lisa’s work with the Oakland Roots SC of the USL Championship League and Millennium Hope Counseling’s partnership with the University of Illinois Chicago.

In this podcast episode of normalizing mental health, we have a wide-ranging dialogue covering people and topics including Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka, Sha’Carri Richardson, Paul George, shocking stressors, trash-talking, next play mindset, naming a feeling, anxiety, meditation, positive relationships, youth sports, and how trauma has no sense of time.

In regards to trauma, there are different kinds of trauma. It is not just physical or sexual abuse, verbal abuse, or neglect. It is broader. Our genetics, our upbringing, our environment, how we react and respond to adversity – it has everything to do with our ability to manage a particular situation. This and many other reasons are why the work of Lisa and others in the field of psychotherapy becomes so critical. Specifically related to sports, a dedicated psychotherapist can help an athlete show up and perform at their peak in the biggest moments.

Listen to this episode and learn more about improving your (or your child’s) performance, opening up about mental health, controlling your emotions, responding to injustice, and much more.
