A Conversation with MuchMusic OG VJ Rick Campanelli

A Conversation with MuchMusic OG VJ Rick Campanelli At Strange Grooves, we love celebrating the iconic moments and people that shaped music culture—and when we had the chance to interview Rick Campanelli, one of MuchMusic’s original VJs, we were beyond excited!  We grew up watching Rick, learning from him and finding new music and resonating with artists in ways we could have never imagined.  We had the privilege of chatting with Rick about his legendary time at MuchMusic, his journey in the entertainment world, and what he's up to now. Here's a quick look back at his career and why this interview meant so much to us. For anyone who grew up in Canada during the '90s and early 2000s, Rick Campanelli (aka "Rick the Temp") is a household name. Joining MuchMusic in the mid-'90s, Rick became an instant fan favourite. His relaxed style, quick wit, and genuine love for music made him the perfect host for the channel. Over the years, Rick became a fixture on Much on Demand, hosted live events, and interviewed some of the biggest stars in music, from rock icons to emerging pop stars. His time at MuchMusic wasn’t just about playing music videos anc meeting incredible celebs—it was about connecting with artists and fans in a way that helped define Canadian music culture. Rick wasn’t just a host; he was a true fan of the artists he interviewed, and that authenticity made him unforgettable and still does to this day. You feel his energy on the screen, at events, and we are so stoked we got to chat with him. This episode of Strange Grooves is brought to you by Loucarius! Planning a ticketed event? Longhaulin' with Bubbles & The Shitrockers: Tales from the Trailer Park

It’s not every day that Strange Grooves gets to sit down with a Canadian icon like Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys, but guess what? We just did!  That’s right, #strangecrew. We packed up the little green machine and made the epic journey down to Halifax to interview Bubbles himself about his two new singles, his band's latest album, Longhauler, which dropped November 1st, and the much-anticipated movie coming out this December 6th, Standing on the Shoulders of Kitties. This interview is particularly special because we have been die-hard Trailer Park Boys fans for over two decades! From watching Bubbles, Ricky, and Julian's shenanigans on TV to rocking with them at Queens Of The Stone Age back in April to sitting down with Bubbles and chatting about his killer music career—it’s a full-circle moment. And trust us, it was every bit as DEEECENT as you'd imagine! Bubbles and The Shitrockers: Your New Favorite Band Bubbles has been rocking out for years, but The Shitrockers are here to blow your mind. We had the honour of talking with Bubbles about his latest single and the new album that just dropped, and let us tell you—it’s friggin’ incredible. From the first chord, it’s obvious this isn’t just some side project. Bubbles teamed up with some legendary musicians, including none other than Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones and Actor and Musician Billy Bob Thornton of The Boxmasters. Yeah, you read that right!  We dove deep into how those collaborations came to be, and it turns out Bubbles’ musical talent knows no bounds. You know you're doing something right when you’ve got rock royalty like Ronnie Wood and Billy Bob on your record! Bubbles also shows us the different versions of the vinyl album available. Record collectors and fans will want to take note!  If you haven’t already, you need to go crank up that new tune—seriously, stop what you’re doing and listen right now. We’ve had it on repeat since our interview. It’s the perfect mix of classic rock and Bubbles’ signature style. Friggin Awesome! Bubbles in the UK and What’s Next Bubbles also gave us the inside scoop on what’s been happening behind the scenes. He’s been spending a lot of time getting the album together and working with top-notch musicians. The energy of the British rock scene has clearly influenced the album, and you can feel it in every track. He’s got more on the horizon, too, but we’ll let you watch the interview for those juicy details. We couldn’t resist asking about his new movie, which will be released on December 6th. Bubbles shared some hilarious stories from the set and hints at what’s coming next for the Trailer Park Boys. You don’t want to miss this film—it will be a wild ride, only in theatres! We hope you love this exclusive interview as much as we loved making it happen. Check it out, get the inside story on the new album, and mark your calendars for December 6th when Bubbles and the boys hit the big screen again. In the meantime, stream the new single, grab the vinyl, and turn the volume up! Until next time, strange crew, keep it strange! This episode of Strange Grooves is brought to you by Loucarius! In our latest episode of Strange Grooves, we had an incredible conversation with James Trocchio, the primary photographer on tour with the legendary Doobie Brothers. We first met James in October last year during the Doobies' sound check in Moncton, where we were lucky enough to get behind the scenes and meet some of the crew. We knew we had to stay in touch since that first encounter, and we’re thrilled to bring this interview to you finally! Listen: Groovin into 2024! Doobie Brothers Sound Check, Bob Dylan Massey Hall, Madonna, and a Phil Call-In! James shared with us what life is like on the road, not only with the Doobie Brothers but also with his previous work touring with artists like Rob Thomas and Matchbox 20, as well as rocking stages with Blink-182. His passion for photography was evident from the moment we started talking, and it was inspiring to hear how his love for capturing moments has grown over the years. From snapping iconic shots on tour to finding his unique perspective behind the lens, James gave us an inside look at what it takes to be a top-tier photographer in the music industry. One of the best parts of our chat was the invaluable advice James shared for aspiring photographers. His words were simple but powerful—just get out there and do it. Don’t wait for the perfect moment or the perfect gear; ask people if you can take their picture, seize opportunities, and most importantly, don’t be a douche! It’s all about building genuine connections and staying humble, something James embodies fully. With the Doobie Brothers coming to our hometown of Saint John, New Brunswick, on October 16, 2024, we couldn’t be more excited to release this episode.
