The whale has swallowed Jonah. Paulson emphasizes Luther's analysis of this text, asserting that this is not a metaphorical pilgrim's journey. Instead, this trial brings on tentatio or the struggle between man and God. Here in the whale, Jonah is confronted with the reality that he cannot escape God's law by means of his own works or even his sacrifice.
