    Empowered Muslim Woman (EMW 3): Women in the Mosque without a Barrier

    Do you know what Rasulullah (S)'s mosque was truly like? If you had walked into the Prophet’s mosque some 1400 years ago, you would find no physical barrier separating the men from the women. Women were considered a valued part of his community with a voice and a choice. Women worshiped, asked questions, and had direct access to their imam without a physical barrier separating them from the rest of their congregation. Children were welcome to his masjid, Rasulullah (S) himself held his tiny granddaughter as he lead the attendees in prayer. Sinners came in, homeless came in, non Muslims came in, and they were welcomed with open arms. It was a safe space for all, not an exclusive club for the religious. If we believe the Prophet (S) is the best example, then how can we make our masajid adhere more closely to the Prophetic model? Through this class, we will learn how the Prophet (S) built people and communities through compassion, teaching, and patience

    Empowered Muslim Woman: ROLE OF WOMEN IN SOCIETY How can a woman interact and participate in her society and community? What roles can she play? Can a woman leave the home? What about the ayah that says "stay in your homes"? Can a woman work? What if that means interacting with men? What are the examples of women who worked in our Seerah? Is her voice Awrah? Has she been defined as "fitnah"? What does that mean? Can a woman teach a mixed gathering of men and women? Can she give fatwa? How about being a judge? What about a governor, a president? All of these questions have been discussed and debated by scholars for over a century.     Slaying Misconceptions:  The Liberation of Women at the Time of the Message The narrative of “Women in Islam” is laden with many misconceptions. A woman must: stay at home, she shouldn’t work, she can’t travel, her husband can beat her, she can’t divorce, she has to be hidden. These are among just a few of the perpetuated untruths about Muslim women that have caused her rights to be stripped from her, leading to the mistreatment and exploitation of half of the Ummah. It’s high time we got rid of our cultural myths and re-educated our Ummah with the true story of women from the Quran and Sunnah, so that they may be empowered and inspired to live as Allah and His Messenger (S) intended. The true story of how the Quran honored women at a time when their worth as humans was in question by society. The true story of how the women in the time of the Prophet (S) were given respect, authority, and value in their communities.  Allah taught us how to honor the woman centuries ago, but with time, the lesson was lost. It’s time to revive the true story of women yet again.
