An important story expertly told

Emily did an incredible job on this podcast. It doesn’t go the way you expect it to at all and her storytelling really draws you in. I hope she does more podcasts like this.

Interesting story, not very educational

The story was interesting, and sympathetically told by the host Emily. I started listening because I wanted to learn about parole and its role in the criminal justice system. I have to say, there was almost no information about parole beyond simply describing what it is and listing a few barriers for people granted parole. I don’t know if there is the intention to expand and tell more stories that may build upon what the first four episodes explore, but as it stands I feel that the podcast misrepresented itself. It ended up being in the style of S-Town in that it was focused on the relationship between the host and the subject, and it felt a bit gratuitous at times. It didn’t really offer a deeper understanding of parole beyond an extremely brief case study, and it was only briefly contextualized in the finale. I did enjoy listening but I was disappointed by how little I came away with.

Excellent

Emily skilfully balances narrative with content, while offering illustrative descriptions of what she sees and hears.

This podcast is exemplary in avoiding framing the story with biases while reporting simply what is observed, providing background context when necessary. True journalism and excellent storytelling.
