Whether it’s surviving on Mars, creating self-sufficient space stations, or even living on an exoplanet, sustainability is a critical element. Space missions teach us valuable lessons that we can apply here on Earth, promoting a circular economy, reducing waste, and pushing us to develop smarter technologies for resource management. Future Mars habitats will need to be designed with sustainability at their core. This means using local materials to build structures, growing food in hydroponic and aeroponic farms, and harnessing solar energy to power life-support systems. Whether it’s recycling water on the ISS, farming in space, or mining asteroids, one thing is clear—sustainability is key to our future among the stars.
