Taken Abroad
On April 16, 2009, while on a trip to Kaduna, Nigeria, Canadian Julie Mulligan is ripped from her car, assaulted with a machine gun and taken hostage by unknown assailants. Hours later she’s forced to call her husband John and demand a cash ransom. What happens next, sets off an unbelievable 14 days, that brings an Albertan family to their breaking point. Host Marci Ien relives every moment of the kidnapping through emotional interviews from Julie and John Mulligan – and further conversations with their closest family and friends. These dramatic recollections are interwoven with Marci’s narration and an original soundtrack, creating a suspenseful podcast series that’s engaging and informative. Additionally, Marci reaches out to the world’s top kidnap and ransom experts, occasionally pivoting from Julie’s story to investigate the many questions that come up around international hostage taking. In the end Marci reunites with Julie to reveal an answer to the one question Julie has been left asking – what happened to her kidnappers.

Everyone should know the risks

Travel abroad is both necessary and fun but it carries an inherent element of danger. Know where you’re going. Understand the actual risks. Find out what the mitigation measures are. Get training before you go!!! Captive Audience is mentioned in episode 4. They are a security company specializing in preventing and responding to hostage situations. I highly recommend them. Their training is overwhelmingly empowering. I had no idea how much I didn’t know until I trained with them.
