Mark is a good dude who has lived a good life. You can see it in his face. Not a life without challenge or disappointment, but a life of meaning and purpose and love and kindness. (How could a “good life” ever be free of challenge and disappointment?) I really enjoy hanging out with this guy. We talk travel, music, film, theater, Manhattan in the 80s and 90s, Crestone in the 2000s…. Life, death — all the juicy stuff.

In an age where we’re told to always strive for efficiency, monetization, and TOTAL OPTIMIZATION, doing something purely for the fuck of it becomes a subversive, revolutionary act.

612 - Mee Ok Icaro (From Death's Door to Becoming a Guide to Healing)

I met this incredible woman over a decade ago (ep 87), when she was in a very difficult spot, suffering from constant pain, unable to move or care for herself. She was preparing to die. In the years since, I’ve seen the light in her grow stronger and stronger. She’s recovered from severe scleroderma, written a book about her journey, been profiled on a Netflix series, featured in Gabor Maté's NYT bestseller The Myth of Normal, and continuously explored her inner world with the help of sacred plants (ayahuasca) and other modalities. Her initiation into the world of healing by way of her own near death experience is as authentically “shamanic” as anything I’m aware of in the modern world.
You can learn more about the retreat she’s leading in Costa Rica here.
This video of Mee Ok and Gabor Mate will give you a sense of the incredible journey my friend is taking.

StumblingSage ,

Thank you, Chris!

Chris flipped my worldview upside down. The podcast plus the book Civilized to death changed my entire trajectory. Very important work teaching human beings to be true to ourselves.

This podcast has changed me in the best ways!

I came across this podcast at a time in my life where travel and change wasn’t possible, but in my mind and in many dark lonely nights Chris would take me with him to meet many friends through his interviews, and was able to travel through his stories.

I was able to dream, grow, and imagine and this year I became an empty nester, freed myself from the corporate career, and now moving forward in the direction I always imagined.

Words can’t express my gratitude for everything Chris has done for my life, happiness, and mental well-being over the years. I am ending 2023 in a completely different space than I started it, and I’ve never been more excited about the future.

The highlight of my year was finally meeting Chis at a retreat this summer and thanking him in person. It was kind of surreal to hear and see him in person all week instead of just listening through the podcast.

Chris will always have a special place in my heart and has given me courage to step into myself.

Phenomenal

The podcast I’ve listened to the most within the past 3+ years. Hours a day for a podcast addict like me. While living abroad, traveling, and otherwise, it brings me solace.
