Conversations on HC: Young Deaths from Colorectal Cancer Skyrocket as New Research Emerges

Conversations on HC: Young Deaths from Colorectal Cancer Skyrocket as New Research Emerges

The recent death of former college football player Craig Roh from colon cancer at age 33 has brought attention to the “alarming” increase of colorectal cancer in young people. The American Cancer Society reports colon cancer is now the most common cause of cancer deaths in men under 50 and second for women under 50. Dr. Alan Venook at the University of California-San Francisco is one of the nation’s leading colorectal cancer researchers. March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and Dr. Venook explains to hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter how to stem the rise in cases among young people. Dr. Venook also talks about his research that found there’s no compromise in colorectal cancer patient survival or the risk of recurrent cancer over time with less radiation—a finding that goes against conventional wisdom.

PopHealth Week: Meet Adam Kautzner, PharmD, President, Express Scripts & Evernorth Care Management

PopHealth Week: Meet Adam Kautzner, PharmD, President, Express Scripts & Evernorth Care Management

Hosts Gregg Masters and Fred Goldstein welcome Express Scripts President Adam Kautzner to discuss “Embracing Innovation to Improve Healthcare Predictability.” Innovation in healthcare means addressing challenges that others can’t or simply won’t. No one knows this better than Adam who is reshaping the role PBMs play to keep costs low for patients and payers and improve patient outcomes. 2024 is expected to be another transformative but challenging year in healthcare— the continued expansion of GLP-1s is fueling affordability concerns and a lack of predictability for employers and health plans; meanwhile patients are demanding transparency, and physician shortages are reshaping the critical role pharmacists play in their communities.

Duality exponential change

Just listen to S2E16: Not a Point but a Trajectory with John Nosta, CEO of Nosta Lab on Healthcare Upside Down with host Dr. Nick. Since ChatGPT is such a hot topic, the examples of historical events to explain the duality of anything new can be good and bad. As John compared it to hire, it's heating too vs a weapon. However, the speed of change in medicine is crucial and therefore it amazes everyone when the useability of ChatGPT exponentially grew vertically, not a gradual user adaptation. Great engaging conversation. Definitely will listen to more episodes. - Thanks, Sabrina
