I'M FROM THE INTERNET

SomethingAwful.com is one of the foundational websites of modern internet culture: the earliest memes, inside jokes, and modes of communication that grace and plague the internet today can trace their roots back to the sprawling forums of this illustrious website. Hosted by Jay Brandstetter and Winslow Dumaine, this podcast dredges up the most notable threads from the depths of the forums. We delve into the absurd architecture of Groverhaus, explore the very beginning of 4Chan, the early days of master poster Dril, examine the discovery and ruination of Chris-Chan, and recount the day when the despised owner of the website, Richard “Lowtax“ Kyanka fought the disgraced filmmaker Uwe Boll in a boxing match, and more. We’re diving into the archives so you don’t have to. Winslow Dumaine is a comedian and illustrator out of Chicago. He’s opened for Kyle Kinane, Dave Ross, and Sam Tallent, and toured with Derek Sheen. His debut work of fiction is The Tarot Restless, a hand illustrated deck of tarot cards and a book of short stories. His next work is a cooperative tabletop card game called RESTLESS, the discord for which is available here. Jay Brandstetter is an internet historian and online content creator out of his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. In addition to a lifetime of firsthand research on the Something Awful forums and elsewhere, he created the popular Twitter account "crazy ass moments in Something Awful history", has over 100,000 views on YouTube, and over 3 million on TikTok. His ongoing work is The Greymuzzle Archives, a series of long-form interviews of elder members of the furry fandom. This program is not affiliated with or sponsored by Something Awful LLC or Jeffrey of YOSPOS. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The hosts have hilarious takes and are very knowledgeable about internet history—nothing like laughing while learning about subjects that I otherwise would have never considered.
Could be so much more

I’m a goon(ette) from early 2000’s and was excited to hear this. But it’s just…missing something? A big part of it is that it’s doesn’t seem to even try to be funny. Most episodes consist of one of the guys telling some story from SA and the other reacting, but for the most part it’s very flat. Jay is pretty inoffensive and vanilla, whereas Winslow has a tendency to be pretentious and self-serious, constantly tying the topic back to himself and his own interests and side projects. I’m sure he’s a brilliant and fascinating person, but I’m not here for that. Maybe these guys are best friends from way back, but they don’t have much chemistry. Issues also arise when they’re discussing topics that have a heavily visual component and are awkwardly trying to describe images to the audience. It just never translates well. Winslow has been teasing some hyuuuuge announcement for the past couple episodes and clearly wants this thing to go big, but I just don’t see that happening unless they really try to figure out what they’re trying to do with this thing (and no, “an advertising platform for Winslow’s card game” shouldn’t be one of them).
Love this pod, love these guys, love these topics.

This pod is about something awful forums but more importantly it’s about the vibes of background radiation of history. The host themselves are very funny and thorough with their topics and it’s overall a good hang. Give them a listen.
