Out of Site: Embiid Out (for real this time) ... There goes the Season

There's the calendar new year. There's the lunar new year. ... and there's the new year that happens every year in Philadelphia 76ers land. It is the day where we ultimately come to hear the news that Joel Embiid will be sidelined with a serious injury that will cause him to miss multiple weeks/months of an NBA season. This time, after seemingly forcing himself to play in the game against the Golden State Warriors, Embiid has now been diagnosed with a meniscus injury. At the time of this recording, it is unclear if it is a tear or something less severe. One thing is for sure. The big man will be out for a period of time. Who's to blame for all of this? The answer is the usual cast of characters. It's on the Sixers for not putting their foot down and protecting their franchise cornerstone. It is on Embiid who forced himself to play despite evidence that he shouldn't have been out there against the Warriors. It is on the NBA for implementing the 65-game minimum rule for in-season awards. It is on media types like Kendrick Perkins and/or Stephen A. Smith who pushed a narrative in one way or another that got into Embiid's ear. There is plenty of blame to go around. It is a potluck of blame, and so many deserve to have a nice big plate of dinner. Embiid's season may (or may not) be over, but the Sixers season continues. Tyrese Maxey is playing at a (confirmed) All-Star level as the guard has been named to his first All-Star Team, but what does the team do now? As always, it depends on the doctors' evaluation of Embiid's knee to ascertain how serious an injury it is and how much time he will miss. The strategies for the season have changed with the trade deadline weeks away and the Sixers owning a top-four spot in the Eastern Conference. As great as Maxey has been, the Sixers may not have the firepower to defeat the Boston Celtics or Milwaukee Bucks in a playoffs series (let alone the talented teams in the Western Conference). Out of Site: Embiid Bests the Joker, Siakim Trade Limits Sixers Options

On today's episode of the Out of Site Podcast, Adio Royster has to eat a little bit of crow as the Philadelphia 76ers defeat Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets 126-121 in South Philadelphia this past Tuesday. (For context, Adio continues to state that Jokic is the best center in the NBA followed closely - his words - by Joel Embiid). Embiid played well. Tyrese Maxey threw in another excellent night in close to 43 minutes played, and stop us when you've heard this: "Tobias Harris has been looking good in the month of January". All of this to say that the Sixers are looking very interesting as a potential contender for the NBA Championship this year, buyers at the NBA Trade Deadline in a few weeks, and an intriguing team to watch in the off-season with all of the potential cap space and assets that General Manager Daryl Morey was able to acquire with the James Harden trade. The Indiana Pacers sent a few players and draft picks to the Toronto Raptors for Pascal Siakim, so that deletes one name from the list of potential targets the Sixers could be trading for. Do the Sixers go after a different potential third star or work the margins and make a ripple or two somehow with buyout possibilities like Charlotte Hornets forward Gordon Hayward or Atlanta Hawks guard Patty Mills. The Sixers could still be in the market for Chicago Bulls guards Zach Lavine and Alex Caruso as well as Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray. We'll have to see what Daryl has planned in a few weeks. Just turned off the new PHLY Sixers podcast because they were talking about the Eagles only to turn this podcast on to hear ten minutes of Utah football talk? You are not on ESPN radio, you advertise this as a Sixers podcast, people come from the radio to podcasts to hear the specific content they are looking for not what you want to talk about. Start a Utah football podcast and talk about that there. Unfollowed.

I’d put SB Nation picking up ‘That’s Ball Folks’ as the underrated acquisition of the summer. I rank it ahead of the Sixers signing PJ Tucker (hope that reference ages well haha). I’ve listened to the pod since it started. I love that the content is different than the same old talking points regurgitated on every other pod in the space. But the content is relevant and something Philly and basketball fans should thoroughly enjoy. Josh is knowledgeable and very well connected- he’s able to get guests others can’t. If you’re a basketball person you’ll love listening to Josh talk ball. If you’re a Philly person, you can relate to his passion and frustration that come with being a Sixers fan. Excited to see what’s ahead for the podcast! It should mesh well with the rest of the Liberty Ballers lineup and rise to one of the top listened to pretty quickly.
