Bas Sou'al | afikra Community Podcast

afikra is all about asking questions and exploring something new. This series takes some of the questions about the histories and cultures of the Arab world asked and explored in one of our community presentations, and broadens it into a podcast episode hosted by Mysa Kafil-Hussain and Yasmin Khawaja. Joining them are community members from our global chapters to explore a topic that they researched and presented. The presentations are the ‎culmination of the afikra coaching process to help identify a topic, research it and develop the ‎presentation. The goal of these presentations is to showcase the presenter’s curiosity and share some knowledge on a ‎topic related to the Arab world’s histories and cultures.

    Who Were the First Photographers of Aleppo? | Jad Moussalli

    In the final episode of this season of Bas Sou'al, the afikra coumminity podcast, Jad Moussalli takes us back through the history of photography in Aleppo. Through the camera lens, we learn about certain moments in the city's histories, its key figures, and its minority communities. Jad introduces us to photographers in Aleppo during the late ottoman period (1870-1920) and the French mandate (1920-1950) and explains how his passion for Aleppo's photographers began.

Farrah tells us about the cultural significance of Zoot Suits, about defense attorney George Shibley, and how the trial unfolded. We discover LA during the 40s, the different tensions that existed at the time, and George Shibley's lost legacy.

    In this episode of the afikra community podcast, Bas Sou'al, Abdulah Al-Ghoul talks about Aden, inspired by an Al-Jazeera article titled "Queen Elizabeth's Last Foothold in Arabia". He gives a brief overview of the key historical context around Britain's colony in Yemen, changing sentiments leading to the "Aden Emergency" through which Yemen gained independence, and the birth of South Yemen — the Arab world's only Marxist state. Finally, together with co-hosts Mysa and Yasmin, he talks about the important (but often overlooked) legacy and ongoing impact of the British in Yemen.
