Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy, a celebrated novelist and a talented painter, were openly gay in conservative 1950s Hollywood. In private, they called themselves The Animals. Simon Callow and Alan Cumming read their love letters; Katherine Bucknell reveals secrets they kept even from their friends, a galaxy of star writers, artists, stage players and movie makers in L.A., London, and New York. The series is capped by a play the lovers wrote together, A Meeting by the River, starring Dominic West, Kyle Soller and Penelope Wilton, and directed by Anthony Page. Hosted on Acast. A wonderful glimpse into their world. And I was sad when I got to the last podcast knowing there would be no more. Perfect production right down to the repetitions of ‘kiss, kiss, kiss...’ at the end of some of the letters.
Excellent!

What a wonderful way to explore an amazing love story. The framing of the podcast is perfect for the reading of the letters between these two wonderful artists. Katherine Bucknell's additional information helps sets the stage and explores deeper meanings of the letters to provide a very welcome layer of insight. What a lost art of communications and what a world they both lived. After each episode I've searched the people who have been mentioned to get more information. I've recommended this podcast to everyone especially my artist friends.

I listened to the whole thing in one week, mostly on the subway, in half-hour increments. And I was completely enthralled throughout. Simon Callow and Alan Cumming are both excellent, and I could only want more of them and more of the letters. Despite my wanting more, script writer Katherine Bucknell did an great job of selecting and editing the letters. Her narration gives just enough information to tie the pieces together and give a sense of the settings, the conflicts, and the events surrounding them. I'm happy to say that as an Isherwood scholar, I learned many new things. As for A Meeting by the River, that was truly inspired. The stage play adapted from Isherwood's novel works wonderfully as a spoken piece. I hope we can see it some day on stage. Penelope Wilton is one of my favorite actresses, and her voice is wonderful to listen to here.
