Welcome to The Nothing But Podcasts Podcast powered by Nexm Creative. I am your host Paul “the producer” Rogers and today we are discussing the art of choosing the title of your podcast.
Of course you want your name to be perfect and unique, but before you fully commit to a name you need to consider a few different variables to make sure you’re not doing a disservice to your exposure tactics.
First, you must consider the most effective length of your podcasts titles.
Half of podcast titles are between 14 and 29 characters
The most popular title length is 16 characters
The average show title is 24 characters
Another thing to think about is title clipping. Im referring to how it is displayed on podcast apps. If the title is too long then it will be cut short on the display.
The next thing to be careful of is keyword stuffing. Having the show title followed by a list of descriptive words can be frowned upon by podcast platforms. Just a fair warning to my fellow podcasters out there because there have been cases where certain platforms have removed shows from their directories because of this.
ambiguity is another mistake that can really derail the visibility of your podcast. Any title with multiple spellings or meanings can be a definite speed bump to your word of mouth discovery.
Make sure to choose a name that’s unique and all your own while avoiding making it too similar to existing shows. Try not to create listener confusion because that can ultimately hurt the success of your podcast.
When titling and creating your shows packaging I’m a huge advocate for self-evident title. It’s one of the best tactics to clearly telegraph what a potential listener will hear if they choose to sample your show. A question must ask yourself is that with over 700,000 live podcasts, can your show really afford not to be self-evident?
Key take aways:
- Show titles should be clear, concise, unique, specific, and evocative
- Across all podcasts, the median show title is 20 characters
- Ambiguity is a roadblock. Avoid it.
- Self-evident titles are a strong component of podcast packaging
Always remember that just like a business, a podcast is something that needs to be well thought out and planned to ensure the best opportunity for success. You also don’t have to do it alone.
