The Art Of Risk

Life offers us many opportunities but some seem too risky to accept. How do we choose what is worth the risk? The Art of Risk is a podcast exploring gutsy choices made by colorful characters. The show defines risk as an active decision that has potential to result in a negative outcome. Our emphasis is not on talking with athletic daredevils, but people who have taken cultural, social, financial, emotional, and even existential risks. Our long-form interview show focuses on ordinary people who’ve taken extraordinary measures to become their best, real selves or act to have a positive impact on the world.

    Because she promised her students she’d never make them doing something she wouldn’t do, Nikkita Oliver performed for the first time at the 2012 Seattle Poetry Slam. And she won. Oliver talks about taking risks as a black, mixed, queer woman, using her background as an attorney to help young, marginalized people understand the judicial system. In 2015 she won the Artist Human Rights Leader Award from the City of Seattle and appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. And now she’s running for Seattle mayor as part of the People’s Party.

But this is exactly what happened to Amelia Bonow after she frankly, gratefully, and unapologetically posted about her abortion on her Facebook page. Then she gave her famous friend, Lindy West, permission to share a screen shot of it with her 65,000 Twitter fans. #ShoutYourAbortion has transformed from a viral tweet to a movement that aims to shift the way society talks and thinks about abortion. Amelia discusses creating a safe place for women to talk about abortion, being doxxed after her Facebook post and how her life has changed as a result of that one choice.

    Former Italian Special Forces paratrooper and James Beard Award-winning chef Tiberio Simone made the risky decision to move to Seattle for love. The relationship didn’t last, but that risk led him to take another: using fresh ingredients on naked bodies as a new art form. With photographer Matt Freedman, he published La Figa: Visions of Food and Form, a book of sensual photography, which quickly became his calling card around the world and led to new adventures. Tiberio discusses being a homeless teenager and a prostitue, dealing with the Mafia in Italy, falling in love, learning English, the importance of family, stealing food to live and sexual happiness.
