Is it a rite of passage into manhood, a pursuit of health benefits, or perhaps a religious obligation? While the conversation surrounding male circumcision is not new, tonight we thought we’d bring up another perspective—one that considers circumcision as a tool for regulating and controlling the male body. As we navigate discussions around consent, particularly for minors and infants, the idea of autonomy and self-identity, I would like to invite you to share with us your experiences of circumcision. How old were you? Were you presented with a choice? Perhaps you opted against circumcision—what motivated this decision? On Political Analysis Prof Sinwell looks at what the different parties are offering the people and whether this is really what the people want. His articles highlight how the parties seemed to have misread the South African community hence the juncture that we find ourselves in. Pro Sinwell says “the assumption that because people voted, their voices have been heard is a shortsighted and dangerous terrain for those who seek fundamental social change. What is required is a deeper, more robust democracy, not one where people vote every five years and then sit back in the hope that the new configuration of power within parliament will hand us down some crumbs to make our lives slightly better”. It is estimated that globally, infertility affects 8–12 % of women who are 20–44 years of age. Physiological causes in men account for 20–30 % of cases of infertility and physiological causes in women for 20–35 %, while 25–40 % are due to issues in both partners. In 10–20 % of cases, no cause is found. Women starting their families at an older age is one of the most common explanations for infertility today. It is vital that those facing infertility issues empower themselves by having the necessary conversation about fertility treatment with their partner and doctor, because there are interventions if treatment is sought sooner rather than later.
