Being a young Jewish man in America is interesting these days. Many of us have begun to critically examine the story we have inherited from our families and community. I grew up immersed in Jewish tradition, with a strong sense of identity, yet I now am forced to question assumptions I once accepted without thought.
Through reflection, I have come to understand the importance asking hard questions and taking responsibility for one’s own conscience. My faith, my observance of Halacha, and my connection to our history remain central to who I am as a young Jew. But I can no longer follow paths simply because they are expected; for example, I have decided I will not serve in the IDF. This is, of course, guided by my belief in tikkun olam.
I carry my identity proudly, but I also must carry the responsibility to do right by the world. And to live with integrity and honesty.
