When Haitian-American man Rudy Eugene viciously attacked and maimed homeless man Ronald Pupo, chewing off large parts of his face, news media around the world ran with the story calling it “the Miami zombie attack” or the “causeway Cannibal”. Soon theories of a voodoo curse or a new drug, 'bath salts' emerged. What ensues is a cautionary tale of the stigma around mental health and justice that isn't always colorblind.
