How to Draw the Bible Verse w/ Julie Parido

We have the pleasure of talking with homeschooling mom and author Julie Parido, who shares insights from her life as a mother to 5 kids and her inventive approach to helping children memorize scripture through drawing. Julie's book, "Draw the Verse," combines biblical passages with drawing activities as a unique and effective memorization technique. From her family life to her motivations behind writing the book, Julie delves into how art can make learning Scripture engaging and memorable. Plus, stay tuned to the end for our kids-only segment where our friend Holloway shares a Bible verse. This episode is packed with inspiration, laughter, and practical tips for nurturing faith at home!

    Clip Finder:

Inspiration Behind "Draw The Verse": "One verse that we were memorizing was Jeremiah 17 five nine, which talks about how when you trust in your own heart, you're like a bush in the desert and you're not growing and spiritually dying, but when you trust in the Lord, you are like a tree by the water, and how that's growing and bearing fruit no matter what the season."
    — Julie Parido [00:05:25 → 00:05:44]

Interactive Learning Techniques: "I actually found that drawing to memorize things is actually one of the top memorization techniques."
    — Julie Parido [00:07:36 → 00:07:41]

Enhancing Memory with Art: "So there's actually research to show that drawing really helps you remember things. So the example they gave, like, if you were trying to memorize a list of words, instead of, like, writing out the words or just going over it over and over in your head, like, actually drawing a picture of the words, like a chair or whatever, that would help you memorize it better."
    — Julie Parido [00:07:55 → 00:08:13]

The Power of Scripture: "One of them being first Timothy 316 that talks about all scripture is God breathed. So this is literally my bible here. Like, this is God's word to us. And so that's important."
    — Julie Parido [00:08:52 → 00:09:03]

Navigating Life's Challenges with Faith: "So if we're going to fight against the temptations of life, we really need to know what the Bible says."
    — Julie Parido [00:09:38 → 00:09:44]

Challenges in Religious Education: "Yeah, I think memorizing scripture a lot of times just feels like, let's memorize scripture. It just feels kind of, like, heavy and want, you know, like, not necessarily the most boring when, you know, we want to play video games and play with friends and, you know, so it's not necessarily like, hey, kids, let's memorize scripture. And the kids aren't always saying, yay."
    — Julie Parido [00:15:22 → 00:15:44]

Revolutionizing Family Activities: "So you really only need one book for the whole family to use indefinitely. Because once you run out of illustrations in the book, you can just print more and go through it a second time."
    — Julie Parido [00:18:12 → 00:18:21]

Embracing Cultural Heritage and Perseverance: "And really, it is a story about perseverance in trying something new and how we can bless others with our gifts and talents."
    — Dorina Lazo Gilmore [00:06:52 → 00:07:02]

The Value of Perseverance: "Perseverance is something that is a character quality that is so important, I think, for all of us, no matter what age we are. And really what it is about is being able to continue moving and doing something despite encountering difficulty."
    — Dorina Lazo Gilmore [00:07:30 → 00:07:47]

Perseverance in Faith: "And what that looks like is it means we need to keep showing up in our relationship with God. We can do that through prayer. We can do that through reading the Bible, studying the Bible, and even being in community together."
    — Dorina Lazo Gilmore [00:11:04 → 00:11:20]

Cultural Heritage and Physical Education: "This is a dance that is kind of having a resurgence with a younger generation, that kids are learning it again, partly because it's hard and also because it expresses our culture, our filipino culture."
    — Dorina Lazo Gilmore [00:13:04 → 00:13:17]

Cultural Representation in Literature: "So it's teaching people about that culture because it is important for us to learn about God's people from all different lands, but also for readers who are Filipino american or who are mixed race, like my kids, to be able to see themselves in the pages of a book."
    — Dorina Lazo Gilmore [00:14:34 → 00:14:52]

Overcoming Self-Doubt: "So that's something that she has to work against, is sort of that negative voice that's in her head. I think that's something we all experience, especially when we're working on something new."

    — Tina Cho [00:10:57 → 00:11:09]

The Uniqueness of Creation: "I think we can learn how creative God is. I mean, the fact that when you think about, like, asteroids, they're not anything beautiful, but each one is different from the other one. It points to how he's created us as humans. We are all different, just like our fingerprints."

The Power of Patience: "So if you've been told that you're a superpower, what if it's being patient? And so it's like, hey, you know, when other people are, like, tapping their foot and getting grouchy because it's taking too long, you just settle in and you wait in line, and you're peaceful about it, and it's not a big deal."
    — Meredith Davis [00:07:46 → 00:07:59]

The Power of Kindness and Sacrifice: "Being a good friend, one of the things that Noah Minor is going to recognize in the minor miracle in the end is the importance of sacrifice."
    — Meredith Davis [00:11:55 → 00:12:03]

The Power of Children's Literature: "I've been able to share those stories with other kids, and that is a huge superpower. And I don't take it lightly."
    — Meredith Davis [00:13:00 → 00:13:06]

The Power of Storytelling in Children's Lives: "Every time I send out that book and a kid picks it up and they read it, I'm connected to that kid. I may never know their name. I may never hear their story. Sometimes I get to, sometimes they'll send me letters and I am just like, wow, I can't wait to start getting mail for the minor miracle because I got lots of letters for her own 2ft. In fact, I got some letters from kids that have arthrogryposis or have had surgeries and have been, like, courageous and brave and strong because of Rebecca's story. And I think, what? That's amazing, that this book, in these pages, can change a life."
    — Meredith Davis [00:13:33 → 00:14:01]

The Creative Process: "Oh, gosh. So I have, I think at every stage I have favorite parts, and then I have, like, parts that are so painful. So, you know, it starts with an idea and that's always like, yes, this is my favorite part. I'm so excited. I can't wait to write this down."
    — Meredith Davis [00:17:09 → 00:17:22]

The Power of Divine Timing in an Author's Journey: "I just have to trust that there's a reason that I wrote it. I wrote for many, many, many years before I even got published. And God was working in my life to teach me to be patient and to w

The Essence of Daily Devotions: "So, devotions is just basically teaching God's word in a short form. Our daily bread is a very short form...  what you're trying to do is put hope into people. And what I love about Our Daily Bread is that we dig into scripture, and that's what I love to do. I love to teach the word of God."
    — Xochitl Dixon [00:06:53 → 00:07:28]

The Journey to Publishing a Healing Children's Book: "But it was in the perfect time when our world was kind of being torn apart and divided with racial tension. And this was a book that became the healing balm that people needed."
    — Xochitl Dixon [00:10:38 → 00:10:47]

Embracing Diversity: "We're all different, so let's come together. Let's be what God intended, the family, God's family that is intentionally created to be different and diverse, because that's what the Bible says. We're all supposed to be different, you know?"
    — Xochitl Dixon [00:10:51 → 00:11:04]

Transcending Emotion Stereotypes Through Color: "He showed us how to process them. And one of the things I like to do in this book is show how each color can kind of represent an emotion and how we can bring that emotion to God and how it's not necessarily the emotion that you would expect."
    — Xochitl Dixon [00:15:36 → 00:15:50]

Spiritual Nurturing of Children: "And so one of the things I want to do is remind people, including adults, that kids, they're not miniature half disciples. They're full fledged disciples if they've given their life to Christ."
    — Xochitl Dixon [00:16:28 → 00:16:40]

Embracing The Storm: "kids are afraid of storms, you know, I was afraid of storms in Wisconsin because that's a whole different kind of storm."
    — Xochitl Dixon [00:19:34 → 00:19:40]

Healing Through Writing: "I had to face some things that I thou

The Importance of Foster Care: "Okay, so foster care is something that people can do to give kids a home who don't have a safe home to be in. And so oftentimes we have kids that are in homes that aren't safe, whether mom and dad aren't financially able to take care of them or emotionally able or whatever, or the state has come in and said, this is just not a safe home because mom and dad are making poor choices or wherever they're living. Oftentimes there's not a mom and a dad. And so what happens is those kids are taken out of their home, and they need a safe place to be while mom and dad or mom or dad or grandma or whoever it is, kind of works on themselves."
    — Melissa MacDonald [00:07:58 → 00:08:36]

Unexpected Joy in Foster Care Adoption: "So we got a call about two and a half years ago about a seven year old boy. Would you be interested in taking him? And it went against the odds of everything we were told. Everybody said, oh, you'll get a sibling set, so you'll get a brother and a sister or three brothers or seven. And we were told, too, we would get a younger one. Like, look for a baby. We had a crib and all of that. And then we got a call about the seven year old boy, and they called us because he loved to go to church, and so they wanted to put him in a home where he could go to church, and so we prayed about it."
    — Melissa MacDonald [00:09:14 → 00:09:44]

Raising Transformational Generations: "what if we raise up a generation that changes the world instead of the world changing them?"
    — Melissa MacDonald [00:12:43 → 00:12:48]

Finding Grace in Imperfection: "Like, we just serve a God who can make beauty out of a fragile clay jar. And I love that picture. I love that reminder, because I am mess up all the time, all the time. And I love that idea that actually, in my mess ups, we serve a God who, out of chaos, brings order and brings beauty."
    — Melissa MacDonald [00:16:21 → 00:16:38]
