Perfect Premise

Love PFT (and HG Wells as well), and this is one of my very favorite podcasts.
The concept is just perfect, and it's absolutely hilarious.

The Ayn Rand episode among others is just genius.

Podcasting and comedy at its peak

Yes, I stand behind that title. No, I don’t have any excuses for discovering this gem nearly a decade after its run started and years after its last episode. Yes, you can dive in at any point and listen to the episodes in any order you’d like—you will be addicted and listen to them all soon enough. No, you don’t need to know anything about the authors these comedians are playing in order to thoroughly enjoy this masterpiece of a series.

Okay, enough of that format. The conceit of this podcast is that HG Wells—played by Paul F Tompkins—has somehow procured a time machine and for reasons unknown is using it to transport famous, currently dead authors from their own lives in the past to 2010s Los Ángeles so he can interview them in a small black box theatre mostly used for improv shows. The authors run the gamut from Plato to Christopher Marlowe to Virginia Woolf to Carl Sagan. Anyone familiar with improv and/or alt comedy will recognize many of the improvisers who step into the oversized boots of these figures with varying degrees of knowledge and an invariably high degree of hilarity.

Looking the the episode list, you may notice that the legendary authors are played by such luminaries as Mary Holland, Lauren Lapkus, Andy Richter, James Adomian, Matt Besser, Matt Walsh, Andy Daly, Jaime Denbo, Jessica Chaffin and the list goes on and on. As impressive as this list of players is, the most remarkable thing about this podcast is that every single person is at the top of their game, handing in what I feel are their best performances. Yes, even Paul F Tompkins, who was on the mythic Mr Show and has hosted a million other podcasts, has never been more enjoyable and flat-out delightful than he is as HG Wells. And I’m somebody who always finds PFT to be an enjoyable and delightful entertainer

So dig in, you’re in for a fifty-plus episode treat. And maybe start with the one where James Arminian plays Walt Whitman because holy cow it is breathtaking.
