Man vs Fish: stories from Northern New Mexico and the Chama River with Taylor Streit

Man vs Fish: stories from Northern New Mexico and the Chama River with Taylor Streit

Today our destination is the Rio Chama in Northern New Mexico with author, guide, and fly shop owner, Taylor Streit, Taos Fly Shop.  Wild and remote, the Chama is a great summer hike-in fishery with freestone and tailwater sections where anglers can get away from the crowds.
Taylor gives a stem-to-stern rundown of the Chama and regales us with tales of commune living in the 1960s, eating jackrabbits, the last grizzly bear, tame elk, getting lost, catching “old Walter” the 26” Brown Trout, Taos Pueblo and the Northern New Mexico vibe.

Dry Flies and Streamers on the Upper Delaware River with Bruce Miller

Dry Flies and Streamers on the Upper Delaware River with Bruce Miller

Today our destination is the world-famous Upper Delaware River and our guest is expert fly angler and guide, Bruce Miller, with the Delaware River Club.  Just a few hours from New York City, the Upper Delaware is considered one of the best technical dry fly fisheries in the country.
Bruce began fishing the Delaware in the 1970’s and bought his first drift boat 1985.  He is now a self-described dry fly and streamer purist and has been guiding clients since 2007 after a career at IBM as a programmer.
Bruce untangles the hatch chart and gives us the low down of the East, West, and Main branches, the great fishing in the many reservoirs in the area, plus tips on downstream presentations and streamer fishing.  Stick around to the very end for a great tip on a fantastic honey hole to end your day.

The Madison River with Dave Kumlien

Our destination is the famed Madison River in Southwest Montana with veteran outfitter, Dave Kumlien, founder of Montana Troutfitters.  Southwest Montana is chock full of world-class water and the Madison River just may be the crown jewel.  Designated a Blue-Ribbon trout stream, the Madison has it all--large trout and high fish counts, prolific hatches and incredible scenery, and of course the famous 50-mile riffle!
Dave gives us the low down on the Madison from top to bottom and provides a unique perspective from his nearly 50 years of guiding and fighting for anglers, guides, and the rivers we love.  Stories of Mother’s Day Caddis “snakes”, giant fish in Hebgen Lake, the great fishing below Ennis Lake, and the real story behind Montana’s stream access laws and the growth in angling pressure.
This show was recorded end of May before the historic Yellowstone floods of 2022.  With host, Steve Haigh

A Good Drift on Idaho’s Silver Creek with Matt Miller and Erika Phillips

A Good Drift on Idaho’s Silver Creek with Matt Miller and Erika Phillips

Our destination is Silver Creek in central Idaho with expert fly angler and author, Matt Miller, and biologist, Erika Phillips, with The Nature Conservancy.  The Nature Conservancy operates an 881-acre open-to-the-public preserve on Silver Creek, one of the West’s most iconic spring creeks.  It’s a magical place with crystal clear water, cloud-like hatches, and beautiful scenery, and yet many anglers depart humbled.  Matt and Erika share why this may be, along with stories of botched casts, spooky trout, Jack Hemmingway, and tips on how to win the day on this challenging stream.
Matt is director of science communications for The Nature Conservancy and award-winning author and editor of the Cool Green Science blog.  He has written many articles appearing in Fly Fisherman, Flyfishing & Tying Journal, Field & Stream, and many more.  Erika is the Watershed Manager for The Nature Conservancy’s Idaho Chapter and is implementing an ambitious 5-year plan to enhance the Silver Creek Preserve for all of us.

Sum-1-? ,

A must listen

No matter what the topic, this is always a great podcast. Even though my destination is only Brookville, Indiana or Ohio, there is something that bumps my learning curve or something new I want to try. Keep doing what you’re doing. If you haven’t listened to this podcast yet, please do yourself a favor, you won’t regret it.

The good stuff

Steve is a fantastic interviewer that asks great questions getting his guests to divulge the information that we as anglers all look for. One episode built enough stoked that I ended up chasing the dream. Keep up the great work and thank you for providing a podcast that continues to deliver.
